Abstract
A double universal joint yoke has first and second yoke portions 52, 54 each with curved mid portion 58 and two axial end portions 56. The curved mid portion has circumferentially extending ends 60, 62 and the axial end portions each have an aperture 64. The circumferentially extending ends of two yoke portions are fixed together by e.g. welding, pressing or squeezing such that the yoke portions form a cylindrical hoop and such that the apertures of the axial end portions are diametrically opposed for receiving two universal joint crosses. Increases stability of the yoke. A method of making the yoke is disclosed.

DOUBLE CARDAN UNIVERSAL JOINT COUPLING YOKE
_. AND METHOD OF PRODUCING SAME
This invention relates generally to universal joints and, more particularly, to a coupling yoke for use with double Cardan universal joints.
A double Cardan universal joint is typically designed to consist of two Cardan universal joints, whose crosses are connected by a coupling yoke with internal supporting and centring means and having intersecting shaft axes.
With current double Cardan universal joint designs, a one-piece sheet metal yoke may be used to couple the universal joints together. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, this sheet metal yoke may be formed with a jigsaw puzzle cut that engages to retain together the ends of a sheet metal blank that is wrapped into a knuckle shape.
The jigsaw puzzle cut joining of the ends of the sheet metal blank may result in inadequate stability of the resulting yoke. In addition, this construction is complex and requires subsequent machining that makes the part expensive to manufacture.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a double Cardan universal joint couping yoke comprising: a first yoke portion having a curved mid portion and two axial end portions, the curved mid portion being configured substantially as a half cylinder with circumferentially extending ends, the axial end portions each having an aperture; and
- 2 a second yoke portion having a curved mid portion and two axial end portions, curved mid portion having a rounded configuration with circumferentially extending ends, the axial end portions each having an aperture; the circumferentially extending ends of the first and second yoke portions being fixed together such that the mid portions of the first and second yoke portions form a cylindrical hoop and such that the apertures of the axial end portions of the first and second yoke portions are diametrically opposed, for receiving crosses of two Cardan universal joints.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a double Cardan universal joint coupling yoke comprising the steps of: forming first and second yoke portions having a curved mid portion and two axial end portions, the curved mid portions having a rounded configuration with circumferentially extending ends, the axial end portions each having an aperture; fastening the circumferentially extending ends of the first yoke portion and the second yoke portion together such that the mid portions of the first and second yoke portions form a cylindrical hoop and such that the apertures of the axial end portions of the first and second yoke portions are diametrically opposed, for receiving crosses of two Cardan universal joints.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
- 3 - Figs. 1 and 2 are front and back views, respectively, of a double Cardan universal joint coupling yoke illustrating a prior art construction;
Figs. 3 and 4 are unassembled and assembled views, respectively, of a double Cardan universal joint coupling yoke illustrating a preferred embodiment of the present invention; and Fig. 5 is an exploded pictorial view of a double Cardan universal joint coupling yoke of Figs. 3 and 4.
A general concept of the present invention is to create a coupling yoke suitable for use in a double Cardan universal joint by means of shaping two independent sheet metal blanks through sequential steps of shearing, squeezing and pressing. The two independent sheet metal blanks are then non-rotatably fastened to one another by means of one or a combination of the following fastening techniques: welding, pressing and squeezing.
Referring now to the drawings, Figures 3 to 5 show an example of the present double Cardan universal joint coupling yoke 50, which comprises two yoke portions 52 and 54 that may be identical, for manufacturing simplicity. The yoke portions 52 and 54 each have an ear 56 at each axial end and a curved mid portion 58 that is configured, substantially, as a half cylinder, half barrel or other rounded configuration. When the curved mid portions 58 are joined together at circumferentially extending ends 60 and 62, the two yoke portions form a cylindrical hoop with axially extending ears 56. The ears 56 have apertures 64 that are diametrically opposed for receiving crosses of two Cardan universal joints.
Unlike previously known designs for couping yokes for double Cardan universal joints, the present coupling yoke provides a stable construction that has less complexity and requires less machining. As a result, the present construction results in an improved coupling yoke with reduced manufacturing cost.
