Abstract

A road traffic sign mounting bracket comprises two bracket clamping plates 2, 5 one of which has fabricated to it a sign post, post holder 7; the plates 2, 5 sandwiching a corrugated crash barrier 1 commonly found on motorway, roadway reservations. As the bracket plates are the same shape and size in depth as the barrier 1, sandwiching the barrier makes the bracket a very safe and sturdy base for mounting a road sign. The bracket can be mounted quickly using one nut 4 and bolt 5, and it can be adapted to display the sign on the inside and outside of the barrier 1. The sign post, post holder 7 can be manufactured to fit and hold many different sizes and shapes of sign post including the commonly used 'A' frame.

Description

Road traffic sign mounting bracket This invention relates to a road traffic sign mounting bracket where the sign is to be temporarily fixed to a typical corrugated roadway barrier.
Road traffic signs that are commonly used temporarily during roadworks and maintenance for informing and guiding motorists, are typically mounted on'A' Frames. These'A'Frames tend not to be fixed and are weighed down with sand bags to make them stable; however they are often blown over by wind and turbulence from large motor vehicles.
According to the present invention there is provided a mounting bracket which allows
for secure and stable fixing of the road sign to a typical section of motorway/roadway corrugated crash barrier, commonly found on motorway/rdaay central reservations. The parts of the bracket that come into contact with the corrugated crash ict wit t barrier have the same shape and are the same size in depth as the barrier to ensure a firm hold is made, preventing the bracket from moving, the barrier is sandwiched between the bracket.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Drawing 1 Shows a section of motorway barrier, with the composite parts of the bracket either side of the barrier.
Drawing 2 Shows two side views of barrier being sandwiched by brackets, fig 2A for a standard road sign, fig 2B for a larger road sign, where the signs are to be displayed on the outside of the barrier.
Drawing 3 Shows two side views of barrier being sandwiched by brackets, fig 3A for a standard road sign, fig 3B for a larger road sign, where the signs are to be displayed on the inside of the barrier.
For the explanation of this invention. a standard road sign as detailed above, is a typical road sign as used to display the speed limit on A and B roads in the United Kingdom.
Referring to the drawings the bracket comprises two clamping plates 2, and 5, one of which has fabricated to it a sign post, post holder 7, which, fit either side of the corrugated barrier 1. The barrier has along its length holes for attaching it to fixing posts. Typically the holes at either end of the barrier are used for this purpose and the intention is to use any hole not being used, to clamp the bracket.
The bracket plates could also be elongated and bolted together above and below the ZD barrier to clamp when no holes are available.
A bolt 4 passes through the signs post 6 holder 7, through the outer bracket plate 5, through the barrier 1, then through the inner bracket plate 2, and is fixed with a mating nut 3 which tightens and clamps the bracket sandwiching the barrier between the inner and outer bracket plates. As the bracket plates are the same shape and depth as the barrier, when the nut is tightend the bracket is clamped firmly to the barrier,
making a firm base to mount the sign. z : l The sign could be fixed to a square channel post 6 though other shapes could be used for post and post holder, holes 8 are shown on the post holder 7 where bolts could be
screwed into tapped holes to hold the sign post 6 in place.
0 In drawings two and three two types of sign posts and post holders are shown, drawing 2 Fig A, and drawing 3 Fig A, show a post and post holder for a standard size road sign, drawing 2 Fig B, and drawing 3 Fig B show a post and post holder for a larger than standard road sign. Other shapes of post holder 7 could be fixed to the bracket, and the bracket could be adapted to fix to the presently used A frame.
In drawings 3 Fig A and 3 Fig B, the bracket is shown with the post and post holder on the inside of the barrier.
