Abstract

A wood screw comprises a head and a threaded shank. The shank has a flat or blunt tip includes a weakened portion so that the head can be separated from the shank.

Description

LOST-HEAD OR HEADLESS WOOD SCREW This patent refers to a lost-head or headless wood screw.
In woodworking, cabinet making, building (etc. ) there are three main methods of joining and fixing wood, MDF, chipboard etc. , these are: 1. Gluing 2. Nailing 3. Screwing Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages as outlined below: Glue : Has the advantage that it can be machined when the fixing process is complete, however the disadvantages are: the final strength and the need for protracted curing or setting periods.
Nails : Whilst this method of fixing is instantaneous and the nail heads can be driven below the surface with a punch to allow additional machining, nailed or pinned assemblies generally lack strength.
Screws: Screwed assemblies have the advantages of strength and are assembled instantaneously, however, the end result, particularly in furniture manufacture requires the unsightly screw heads to be masked or covered. Additional machining is also difficult due to the obstruction caused by the screw head. The headless or lost-head screw is a device whereby all the advantages of the above fixing methods are achieved without the disadvantages.
According to the present invention the lost-head/headless screw is a wood screw with a blunt tip and a weak/shear zone between the head and screwed section.
As the torque increase the screw head snaps off at the shear zone.
The specific embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example with reference the accompanying diagrams of which: Figure 1. Shows the general construction.
The screw has a flat tip (a) and weak/shear section (b).
Figures 2,3 and 4 show the application, installation and operation.
Application and Installation Method 1. A pilot hole is drilled in the pieces of material to be joined (Fig 2).
2. The screw is inserted and tightened (Fig 3).
3. As the screw has a flat tip when it reaches the limit of the pre-drilled pilot hole the torque increases and the screw shears at the weak point leaving the screw section joining the two pieces of material (Fig 4).
The advantages of this type of fixing are : 1. the screw, once'the head has sheared off, is below the surface allowing further surface machining ; 2. has the strength of a screwed assembly ; 3. the actions are quick and easy to perform with no protracted periods waiting for glue to set.
