Abstract

A baby cot 1 uses a repelling magnet system 4,6 to give a continual random motion of the cot within the confines of the frame 3 in reponse to movement of the baby. Magnet 4 is mounted on leg 5 in such a way so as to allow the gap between magnets 4 and 6 to be varied and thus the rate of movement of the cot to be controlled. As the baby grows, the cot can be replaced by a crib. The cot is also detachable from the frame and can be used as a cradle whilst the frame can be used as a playpen.

Description

SELF ROCKING BABY COT This invention relates to a baby's cot or cradle that uses motion to rock the cot within the confines of it's frame. It can be upgraded as the baby grows and can be used as a playpen during the day making it multi-funtional in its'purpose.
Every new-born baby has some type of cot/cradle varying in design from Moses baskets to cots with slide-down sides for easy access. Yet few are multi-purpose and
even fewer incorporate the concept of motion. None use motion and are mutli-purpose in design.
The objects of this invention are to rock the baby to sleep for the mother-a major advantage, especially after night feeding-and to be used as a playpen when the baby is active to reduce storage space and costs.
Accordingly, this invention provides a baby cot, similar in shape to a standard Moses basket, suspended from each comer by cloth covered wire to a central point of the overhead beam. The beam is shaped at an approximate angle of 45 degrees from the central point down at each end which then attach to the top of the frame, suspending the cot within the frame. Beneath the cot is a neadinium magnet that repels away from magnets set into the base of the frame, thus creating motion.
The beam and base are detachable leaving the frame as a playpen. Preferably the cot, beam, base and frame are to be made from Beechwood and moulded plastic. The cot is designed for new-born to 8 month old, at which time it can be changed for a larger cot which is a smaller version of the frame in design.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows a side view of the whole cot FIGURE 2 shows a side view of the cot being dismantled leaving a playpen FIGURE 3 shows the magnets up close FIGURE 4 shows the upgrade DESCRIPTION As shown in Figure 1, the self rocking cot comprises of a cot bed (1) suspended from an overhead beam (2) which in turn is attached to the cot frame (3). At the bottom of the cot you will see a single magnet (4) at the end of a'stork' (5). At the base of the cot there are five magnets (6) arranged in a circle. The gap between the base magnets
and the cot magnet varies between 14 inches as the stork is extendable and retractable. This gives the parent the ability to control the rate of movement (see Figure 3).
Figure 2 shows how the overhead beam (2) and the base magnets (6) detach from the frame (3) which can then be used as a playpen.
Figure 3 shows how the parent can control the rate of movement. The stork (5) is a three piece comprising of a slide extender (7), a screw-in piece (8) and the end piece containing the single magnet (4). By extending the stork to it's fullest position the magnets are closer together thus creating the most amount of repulsion and the fastest rate of movement. As the stork retracts by force from the base magnets (6), the magnets become further away and the rate of movement slows. The whole stork unclips from the cot as do the suspending arms (10) leaving the cot which can be put on the floor and rocked end to end as the bottom of the cot is curved.
Figure 4 shows the cot upgrade (9) which has been designed for 8 month-2 years.
The cot bed is simply changed for the larger version whilst everything else remains the same.

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS 1 A baby cot comprising of cot, overhead beam and frame which uses magnets to cause random movement of the cot within the confines of its'frame. Detachable parts allowing multi-functional usage of the cot.
  2. 2 A baby cot as claimed in claim 1 wherein a unique magnet system allows the rate of movement of the cot to be controlled.
  3. 3 A baby cot as claimed in claims 1 or 2, wherein the rate of movement can be slowed over a period of time.
  4. 4 A baby cot as claimed in claims 1,2 or 3, wherein the beam and frame base are detachable from the sides which can then be used as a playpen.
  5. 5 A baby cot as claimed in claims 1,2, 3 or 4, wherein the stork and the cot arms can be detached from the cot which can then be rocked end to end on the floor, as the cot base is curved to allow for such movement.
  6. 6 A baby cot substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-4 inclusive of the accompanying drawing.
