The invention also includes the use of such a membrane in a building cavity, and a building construction (9), particularly for housing, comprising an outer skin (10); an inner skin (11); a cavity (12) between the inner and outer skins (10, 11); and sheets of thermally insulating membrane (1) located in the cavity (12) and secured to the inner skin with open lap joints (15) at horizontal edges.
Description
Title of the Invention Membrane and building construction Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a membrane for use in building construction, and to a building construction incorporating same.
Background of the Invention
In the construction of buildings, particularly housing, there is a requirement for thermal insulation meeting BRE requirements particularly in a cavity wall, especially in timber frame or modular housing. Such membranes require breathability to achieve condensation dispersal but have achieved this only to a limited extent.
Object of the Invention
A basic object of the invention is the provision of an improved thermal insulation/ breather/venting membrane and building construction.
Summary of a First Aspect of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a thermal insulation/breather/venting membrane for use in building construction comprising: (i) a sheet of aluminium foil having an outer surface and an inner surface; (ii) a coating applied to the outer surface of the aluminium foil to prevent or restrict oxidation ; and (iii) a sheet of synthetic plastics material consisting of two layers, being an inner, planar layer
bonded to an outer layer, which outer layer is deformed to define a plurality of closed air pockets or bubbles, the plastics material being bonded by its planar, inner layer to the inner surface of the aluminium foil, whilst the air pockets or bubbles are fully exposed to atmosphere.
Advantage (s) of the First Aspect
The membrane in accordance with the first aspect provides for increased breathability compared to prior art membranes, is waterproof, increases the U-value without increasing the wall thickness, is fire retardant, is CFC/HCFC free, and is BRE certified.
Summary of the Second Aspect of the Invention
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a building construction, particularly for housing, comprising: (i) an outer skin eg of brickwork or blockwork; (ii) an inner skin eg of timber or steel frame; (iii) a cavity between (i) and (ii); and (iv) sheets of membrane in accordance with the first aspect located in the cavity and secured to the inner skin such that at least adjacent horizontal edges of adjacent sheets of membrane are overlapped, with lower edges of an upper sheet overlapping upper edges of lower sheets to provide a non-sealed, open breathable lap joint.
The use of (iv) results in ready escape of moisture into the cavity due to the increased breathability provided by the use of exposed air pockets.
Preferred or Optional Features
Vertical edges of adjacent sheets of membrane are overlapped.
An inner face of the inner skin is provided with a lining eg of plywood sheets, to which lining the sheets of membrane are attached.
Summary of a Third Aspect of the Invention
A third aspect of the invention relates to the use of a membrane as a thermal insulation/breather/venting membrane in a cavity between inner and outer skins of a building, with at least one unrestricted flow path for air and/or water vapour around the individual air pockets or bubbles.
Drawings
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a diagrammatic section through a wall of a building construction in accordance with the second aspect, provided with a membrane in accordance with the first aspect;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a building construction in the form of a wall; and
Figure 3 shows, a portion of the sheet of synthetic plastics material.
In Figure 1, a thermal insulation/breather/venting membrane 1 comprises a sheet 2 of aluminium foil having an outer surface 3 and an inner surface 4. To the outer surface 3 is applied a coating to prevent or restrict oxidation. To the inner surface 4 is bonded a sheet 5 of synthetic plastics material consisting of two layers only, being an inner, planar layer 6 and an outer layer 7, the latter being formed into a plurality of individual, closed air pockets or bubbles 8, which air pockets 8 are fully exposed to atmosphere.
In Figures 1 and 2 a building construction 9 in the form of a wall, comprises an outer skin 10 of brickwork or blockwork, an inner skin 11 of timber or steel, with skins 10 and 11 spaced apart to define a cavity 12, in which cavity 12 sheets of membrane 1 in accordance with the first aspect are located, and secured to the inner skin 11, with adjacent horizontal edges of adjacent sheets of membrane 1, with lower edge 13 of an upper sheet of membrane 1 overlapping upper edge 14 of a lower sheet of membrane 1, to provide a breathable, open lap joint 15 to allow escape of moisture through lap joints 15. Sheathing plywood sheets 16 are also located in the cavity 12 and interposed between the membrane 1 and the inner skin 11. Outermost portions 17 of each air pocket 8 seat against the plywood sheets 16, although in Figure 1, a gap is indicated for clarity. Similarly, along the length of a lap joint 15, outermost portions 17A of each pocket seat against outer surface 3A of the aluminium foil 2, although a gap is again indicated in Figure 1, for clarity.
Consequently, air and/or water vapour flow paths, indicated by arrows 18 exist, ensuring that any water vapour that does enter the building construction 9 can exit by the flow paths 18, through the breathable lap joints 15.
