Abstract

To produce transparent, wool-like, linen, damask, crepe, and parchmented effects, natural or artificial cellulosic yarns, fibres, and fabrics are treated with sulphuric acid in conjunction with one or more sulphonic acids of the benzene or naphthalene series, or their hydroxy-substituted compounds. The treatment may be preceded or followed by mercerizing, calendering, embossing, or other finishing processes. Sulphonic acids of benzene, phenol, cresols. naphthols, naphthalene, and benzaldehyde are mentioned. The sulphuric acid may be mixed with the sulphonic acids and applied over the whole or to parts only of the material by spraying, stencilling, printing, or by the use of a resist &c., or the material may be treated with the sulphonic acids or with substances capable of producing them before the sulphuric acid treatment. The dyeing properties of yarns and fabrics and the affinity of the fibres for dyes are modified by their treatment with the sulphuric and sulphonic acids.
