Franking or postmarking letters. - An horizontal rack b having a handle a operates gears with a vertical rack d carrying at its lower end a franking stamp. The rack b is provided with coin-freed and full-stroke mechanisms of usual construction. In order to accommodate letters of all sizes, the machine has a triangular slot k into which they are inserted cornerwise. A spindle e, on which the dating or franking stamp f is pivoted, is secured between the two branches d' of a forked lower end of the rack d, and passed through slots in two cheek plates g<1> of a presser-foot g. A spring h is arranged between the rack d and a head g<2> of the presser-foot to allow for the varying thickness of letters. The head g<2> has on its underside. an inking-pad i with which the stamp f is normally in contact. When the machine is operated, the stamp is inverted in known manner by a pivoted cam link j on the presser-foot having a pin j<1> engaging a slotted arm f<1> on the stamp, the cam link being rocked by the spindle e engaging the slot therein.
