Abstract
A flexible storage container 1 for liquids comprises a liquid storage space 2 of non-angular, preferably circular, shape and means 3 for removing liquid from the storage space. The liquid storage space may alternatively be oval in form. The liquid removal means are preferably administration ports and the flexible storage container is preferably fabricated from a double walled, gas permeable material. The flexible storage container may have a lower, substantially semi-circular end 11 and an upper, substantially rectangular end 12, the upper end further defining an area 9, remote from the storage area, for locating a label 10. The flexible storage container is especially suitable for storing blood.
Description
2358386 FLEXIBLE STORAGE CONTAINERS FOR LIQUIDS This invention relates to
flexible storage containers for liquids and particularly, but not exclusively, relates to flexible storage containers for storing blood subsequently used in blood transfer operations.
Such containers are known as "blood bags".
According to the invention, a flexible storage container for liquids is formed with a liquid storage space of non-angular shape and means for removing stored liquid from said storage space.
Use of a non-angular storage space ensures that the space is free of corners which form traps for liquid within the space.
The preferred shape of the storage space is substantially circular.
When used as a blood bag, the non-angular storage space of the container does not allow blood platelets (thrombocytes) to be trapped.

The storage space 2 has a capacity for holdin( 1.0 litres of blood. i The storage container 1 is substantially flat.4 and is formed by double-walled transparent" permeable material known as 11Zellam11,(Trad Mark). The two walls of the material,each 0 which is of 300 Micron thickness, are weldec together, as indicated by joints 4,5,6,7,1 11Zellam11 sheet material is obtainable froo Stedium S.A. (Z.I des Paluds, Avenue de Jogues/Bl 1051, F-13781, Aubagne Cedex, France). I t possesses high oxygen/carbon dioxid4 permeability and thus allows platelets present i the storage space 2 to breath. It remain transparent, even after the container 1 has beerl subjected to sterilisation. 1 The container 1 has a lower, substantiall semi-circular, end 11 and a substantiall rectangular upper, flap-like end 12, which define an area 9 for locating a label 10. Th arrangement allows the container 1 to carry a] label which is remote from the storage space 2 scl that it cannot interfere with space 21; permeability.
2 The area 9 also locates a press-out flap 15, provided to allow the container 1 to be suspended in use, using the space left by the flap 15.
In addition to the twin administration ports 3, the container 1 is provided with a filler tube 16 disposed between the ports 3. In use, the lower end of the tube 16 is closed, using a releasable clamp 28, provided with a thumbwheel 29 whereby a squeezing action may be imparted.
The lower extremity of the tube 16 is sealed by a weld 30.
The twin-walled flexible material extends below the storage space 2. The upper ends of the administration ports 3 and filler tube 16, are inserted into tubes 17, 18 respectively, forming ports which are disposed between the twin walls of flexible material and are then secured in place in a leak-tight manner by welding the surrounding portions of the walls together. Grooves 31, 32 are formed so as to "key" tubes 17, 18 respectively firmly in place.
The lower part 6 of the container 1 is formed so that storage space drainage pockets 28 are provided above the ports 3. The pockets 28 which do not form part of the storage space 2, ensure substantially maximum delivery of platelets to a patient.
3 - The lower end of each administration port 3,1, (only one of which is usually employed during la blood transfusion operation), is closed by a plug with an extension arm 26. TO gain access tlilie arm 26 is used to pull the associated plug 25 o ult 1 of the way, exposing a frangible seal (not shown ii closing off the end of the port 3.
A standard transfusion tube, which has a spiked 1 upper end, is then inserted into the port 13 whereby the frangible seal is ruptured to releasie blood into the transfusion tube. The transfusio tube is a tight push f it into the lower end of the port 3.
A full container 1 may be spun about an axis 27iii disposed substantially normal to the plane ofE the container 1, prior to use, using a rotatab.'1.b 1 1 platform.
The container 1 may then be picked up and i t r', contents visually examined, against the lighti, the transparency of the container allowin this. The corner-less shape of the storage spac 2 prevents local collection of platelets withi the space In a non-illustrated modification,th substantially circular storage space 2 113 replaced by one of substantially oval form.

Claims (11)
1 A flexible storage container for liquids, formed with a liquid storage space of non-angular shape and means for removing stored liquid from said storage space.
2. A flexible storage container as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the shape of the storage space is substantially circular.
3. A flexible storage container as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the shape of the storage space is of substantially oval form.
4. A flexible storage container as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said means for removing stored liquid from said storage space comprises at least one administration port.
5. A flexible storage container as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, formed by double-walled transparent permeable material.
6. A flexible storage container as claimed in Claim 5, having a lower, substantially semi-circular end and a substantially rectangular upper end.
7. A flexible storage container as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the substantially rectangular upper end defines an area for locating a.-label, which is remote from said storage space.
8. A flexible storage container as claimed in any one of Claims 4 to 7, wherein the lower part of the container is formed with storage space drainage pockets.
