Abstract

A stand for hanging ceiling paper comprises a base 10, a telescopic height adjustable body 12,14,16, a shelf 24 and a horizontal roller assembly 28a,b,c at the top. With the height of the stand adjusted so that the rollers 28a,b,c are within comfortable reach, pasted paper is folded onto the shelf 24 and draped across the rollers 28a,b,c. The stand is then raised so that the rollers 28a,b,c are almost touching the ceiling. The paper is stuck to the ceiling around the vicinity of the stand; the stand then moved and paper applied around its new position, etc until the ceiling is covered. The middle roller 28b can be removed to allow papering around protruding objects such as light fittings (see fig 3). It is intended that the stand hold paper close to the ceiling so that the paperer can work about it single-handed and with both hands free.

Description

2357263 CEILING PAPERING DEVICE This invention relates to a Ceiling
Papering Device and in particular to a device to make the task of papering a ceiling easier and faster.
Papering of ceilings has always been awkward uncomfortable and often frustrating to carry out, as the decorator needs to be constantly working against gravity with his arms above his head until the complete length of paper has been applied to the ceiling. It has therefore never been the favourite task of the majority of professional or D.I.Y. decorators, being carried out generally in one of two ways- 1. THE PROFESSIONAL APPROACH. Traditionally carried out by one person using a suitably sized plank supported at both ends by trestles of appropriate height. The decorator climbs onto the plank at one end balancing the pasted and folded length of paper, sometimes laid on a board, in one hand, whilst applying the paper to the ceding with the other. He slowly walks along the plank, unfolding and applying the paper to the ceiling as he goes.
2. THE D.I.Y. APPROACH. Carried out by two people, one of whom holds the cut length of pasted and folded paper up towards the ceiling, either in their outstretched arms or balanced on the bristled end of a broom or other makeshift device, whilst the other, after climbing stepladders, takes one end of the paper and applies it to the ceiling, both continuing across the room in this way until the complete length has been applied.
The Professional Approach has the advantage of one man operation but requires considerably more skill and needs cumbersome equipment in the form of planks and trestles.
The D.l.Y. Approach requires less skill as it leaves the decorator both hands free to position and apply the paper, but has the disadvantage of requiring two people.
Both approaches require that once paper has begun to be applied, it is not possible to stop until the complete length has been stuck.
According to the present invention, there is provided a Ceiling Papering Device comprising a set of vertically adjustable, telescopically received elements, with the lowest element secured vertically into a stable base, one of the elements having a platform attached and the topmost element being surmounted in basic form by at least one horizontal bar or roller, or preferably by a roller assembly and support fork which also carries a clamp to hold the paper whilst the roller is being raised. The preferred roller assembly also provides a method to lock or adjust 2 the ease of roller rotation and incorporates a central roller, the position of which can be altered or the roller removed completely to assist in negotiating ceiling obstacles such as light fittings.
The preferred roller assembly is also equipped with removable nonslip washable outer sleeves.
In order to facilitate transportation and storage, the support fork, roller assembly, platform and base are preferably demountable from the telescopic elements and the platform and base can be further dismantled or folded.
The invention will now be described further by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which - Figure 1 shows the device in perspective with preferred roller assembly and support fork.
Figure 2 shows examples of the device in basic form with horizontal bar or simple roller (inset).
Figure 3 shows the support fork and roller assembly with centre roller removed.
Figure 4 shows a cross section of end roller 28A with one method of locking or adjusting ease of roller rotation using wingnut 30.
Figure 5 shows a cross section of centre roller 28B illustrating one design for roller removal.
Figure 6 shows a plan view of the usual starting position for papering.
Figure 7 shows the Papering Device in diagrammatic form positioned and ready for loading with paper.
Figure 8 shows the Device loaded with pasted paper clamped into position, Figure 9 shows the Device with roller assembly raised to ceiling level.
Figure 10 shows the paper released ftom clamp 34 and applied to ceiling.
Figure 11 shows the Device moved backwards with newly unfolded paper awaiting application to ceiling.
3 Figure 12 shows last 1000mm of paper awaiting application to ceiling with Papering Device in final position before lowering.
Figure 13 shows last I 000mm of paper being re-smoothed onto ceiling with Papering Device in lowered position.
Figure 14 shows the procedure for papering around a small light fitting with centre roller 28B removed.
Figure 15 shows one instance when locking or increasing friction on rollers could be beneficial.
Figure 16 shows separate cross halfjointed components of base 10 with stays 18 removed.
Referring to the drawings, the Papering Device comprises a stable, smooth bottomed base 10 into which a set of telescopically received elements 12, 14 and 16 are releasably inserted.
The element set is anchored to the base by rigid steadying stays 18.
At the top of element 12 there is a height adjustment collar 20 which acts upon element 14 to lock it at any height selected.
At the top of element 14 there is a further height adjustment collar 22 which acts identically on element 16.
Below collar 22 there is a lightweight, demountable platform 24 which is eccentrically attached to element 14.
At the top of element 16 there is a demountable assembly consisting of a two pronged support fork 26 which carries a lightweight three part roller assembly 28A, 28B and 28C having removable non-slip, washable outer sleeves 36.
Rotation of the outer rollers 28A and 28C is ffictionally adjustable by wingnuts 30 and the central roller 28B is detachable.
Also attached to the support fork 26 is a plate 32 which carries a spring loaded clamp 34.
Platform 24 when demounted is foldable along its centreline and base 10 upon removal of stays 18 splits into two components cross halfjointed at the centre.
It is usual to begin papering a ceiling starting from the comer of a room with the lengths of ceiling paper running parallel to the side walls with the cut ends abutting the two adjacent walls.
With reference to the above and the accompanying drawings standard usage of the Papering Device is now described as follows - Place the Papering Device close against a side wall and approximately I 000mm away from the adjacent wall from which you intend to begin, with the roller assembly 28(AB,C) and platform 24 parallel to and facing away from the chosen adjacent wall. Figure 6.
4 Slacken adjustment collar 20 and lift element 14 until platform 24 is approximately chest to shoulder height. Lock adjustment collar 20.
Slacken adjustment collar 22 and lower element 16 until roller assembly 28(AB,C) is within easy reach. Lock adjustment collar 22. Figure 7.
After cutting paper to length, paste and fold to a suitable size and load onto platform 24 draping the topmost folds over roller assembly 28(AB,C) with pasted side uppermost. Clamp end of draped paper into clamp 34. Figure 8.
Using adjustment collar 22 lift element 16 until roller assembly 28(AB,C) is almost touching ceiling. Lock into position with adjustment collar 22. Figure 9.
Using step ladders, release paper from clamp 34, pull it over rollers 28(AB,C) and apply to ceiling in the usual manner. Figure 10.
After descending stepladders, slide Papering Device backwards approximately I OOOMM to unfold more paper, and apply to ceiling- Figure 11.
Repeat last step until Papering Device is within approximately 1 00Omm of opposite wall. Figure 12.
Position stepladder between Papering Device and wall and smooth remaining paper up onto ceiling cutting off any excess overlap. Slacken adjustment collar 22 and lower element 16.
Finally check fit of last 1 00Omm of paper and if necessary pull back and re-smooth onto ceiling, cutting paper to fit wall/ceiling junction as required. Figure 13 Repeat the procedure until the ceiling has been completed.
Two features requiring further clarification are use of wingnut 30 and centre roller 28B removal.
Wingnut 30 as detailed in Fig. 11 can be used to lock or adjust the ease of rotation of rollers 28A and 28C. Locking rollers can be beneficial when the weight of paper on the platform side of the rollers is approximately equal to the downward force of the paper awaiting application.

The centre roller 28B is removable to facilitate papering around objects such as a ceiling rose and flex. Obstacles up to approximately 10Omm wide can be accommodated in this manner but as with other papering techniques many large fittings will need removal prior to commencing papering. The technique is illustrated in Figure 14.

Claims (11)

  1. I A Ceiling Papering Device comprising a set of vertically adjustable telescopically received elements, with the lowest element secured vertically into a stable base, one of the elements having a platform attached and the topmost element being surmounted in basic form by at least one horizontal bar or roller or preferably by a roller assembly and support fork.
  2. 2 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claim I wherein a clamp is provided to hold the paper whilst the roller assembly is raised.
  3. 3 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I and 2 wherein a means is provided to lock or adjust ease of roller rotation.
  4. 4 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I to 3 wherein the position of the centre roller can be altered or is completely removable.
  5. A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I to 4 wherein the rollers have non-slip washable removable outer sleeves.
  6. 6 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I to 5 wherein the platform is demountable from the telescopic elements.
  7. 7 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I to 6 wherein the demounted platform folds into two along its centreline to facilitate storage and transportation.
  8. 8 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I to 7 wherein the roller assembly and support fork are demountable ftom the telescopic elements.
  9. 9 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims I to 8 in which the stable base is demountable from the telescopic elements.
  10. 6 A Ceiling Papering Device as claimed in claims 1 to 9 in which the stable base dismantles into two separate components after releasing steadying stays.
  11. 11 A Ceiling Papering Device substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 to 16 of the accompanying drawings.
