Abstract

A castor 11 comprises a housing 16, a wheel 2 rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis on the housing, and a mounting member 17 having a lower portion 17c rotatably held in the housing and a screw-threaded upper portion 17a which engages in a bore 18 in an article of furniture, wherein the mounting member comprises at or adjacent its lower end, a configuration which enables it to be rotated by a driving tool. The lower end of the mounting member may be provided with a recess 17d to receive the tip of a suitably configured screwdriver or key. Alternatively, the mounting member may be provided with a non-circular peripheral portion 17b for engagement by a correspondingly formed socket or spanner.

Description

2354703 CASTOR The invention relates to castors.
Castors are widely used for supporting articles, such as cabinets or other pieces of ftuniture, and each comprise at least one wheel mounted for rotation about a generally horizontal axis in a housing which is itself mounted for rotation about a generally vertical axis, with the horizontal axis offset laterally from the vertical axis to give a castor effect, that is to say to cause the wheel to trail from the vertical axis having regard to the direction of movement in which the cabinet or other piece of furniture mounted on the castors is being propelled. When that direction changes then the castors swivel about the vertical axis to cause the horizontal axis again to trail from the vertical axis having regard to the new direction of movement.
Generally the housing has an upward projection to engage in a bore in the cabinet or other piece of fim-fiture with a swivel arrangement to permit the required swivelling of the housing about the vertical axis. The swivel arrangement may comprise a loose sleeve surrounding the upward projection, particularly if the upward projection with the sleeve thereon is a press fit in the bore, or may comprise a screw threaded member to engage with a screw thread in the bore with the housing swivellably mounted on the lower end of the screw threaded member. Such a screw threaded arrangement may give the facility to adjust the height at which the cabinet or other piece of ftuniture is supported and a wrenching configuration is frequently provided on the screw threaded member at a position in its length above the engagement with the housing, such that the jaws of an open ended spanner can be engaged with the wrenching con-figuration to rotate the screw threaded member with respect to the cabinet or other piece of finmiture. Rotation of the screw threaded member by means of such a spanner is however not an easy operation, the spanner may need to be thinner than spanners normally are and since it may not be possible to swing the spanner through a very large angle, insertion of a screw threaded member into a cabinet or other piece of fimiiture may be a time consuming operation.
2 According to the invention a castor has a housing, a wheel rotatable about a generally horizontal axis on the housing and a mounting member having a lower portion rotatably held in the housing and an upper portion screwthreaded to engage in a bore in a cabinet or other piece of ftimiture, the mounting member having at or adjacent its lower end a configuration which enables it to be rotated by a driving tool.
The lower end of the mounting member may, for example, be provided with a slot or a cross head recess to receive the tip of a suitably configured screwdriver, may have a hexagon or other non-circular peripheral configuration for engagement by a correspondingly formed socket, ring or open j awed spanner or may have a recess in the end face of a non-circular cross section for engagement by a key such as an Allen key.
The invention is diagrarnatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 1 is an elevation of a castor; Figures 2, 3 and 4 are respectively a side elevation, an underneath plan and a sectional view on line XX of Figure 1 of a castor of previously proposed kind; and Figures 5 and 6 are views corresponding to Figures 3 and 4 of a castor according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings and firstly to Figures 1 to 4, a castor I comprises a pair of wheels 2, 3 mounted, by means of an axle 4 about an axis 5, on either side of a housing 6. A mounting member 7 comprises an upper screw threaded portion 7a, an intermediate wrenching portion 7b and a lower portion 7c which is engaged in a bore 8 in the housing 6, is rotatable in the bore 8 and is retained by a spring ring (not shown) which encircles the portion 7c adjacent the free end thereof The screw threaded portion 7a of the mounting member 7 can be inserted in a bore in, for example, a base or leg of a cabinet (not shown) and screwed thereinto by engaging an open jaw spanner with the wrenching configuration 7b.
3 Referring to Figures 5 and 6, in a castor 11 the wheels 2,3 and axle 4 remain unchanged compared with the castor of Figures 2 to 4, but the housing 6 is replaced by a housing 16 which has a bore 18 extending completely therethrough from top to bottom and a mounting member 17 has an upper portion 17a and an intermediate portion l7b corresponding to the portions 7a and 7b respectively of Figures 2 to 4, but has a lower portion 17c extending downwardly to the underside of the housing 16 through the bore 18. At the lower end the portion 17c has a wrenching configuration, shown in Figures 5 and 6 as a hexagonal socket 17d with which an Allen key inserted from below can be engaged to rotate the mounting member 17, for example to screw it 10 into a screw threaded socket in the underside of a cabinet or to unscrew it therefrom.
