Abstract

A venting system for a battery having a plurality of cells includes a battery cover, a plurality of condensation chambers, and a lid. The condensation chambers are formed on at least a portion of the top surface of the cover. Each of the condensation chambers includes a floor and a housing for receiving gases vented from the cells of the battery. A sump depends downward from the floor of each of the condensation chambers. The sump has an aperture and a floor that is disposed at an angle to the horizontal. The aperture serves a dual purpose as a means to vent the gases from within the cells and as a means to return electrolyte to the cells. The angle of the floor promotes the return of condensate that flows into the sump. The lid is provided to cover each of the condensation chambers. A plurality of baffles extend from the inner surface of the lid into each of the condensation chambers.
