Abstract
235,050. Ehrenreich, A., and Bendixen, R. Aug. 25, 1924. Fibres, obtaining.-Fibres are obtained from the skins of chondropterygians and plagiostomes or from the waste of tanned skins thereof. Long silk-like threads of great tensile strength and having high water-resisting qualities are obtained. The prickles or horn plates are first removed by known treatment with dilute acids. The skins are then swelled with dilute sodium sulphide solution and reduced to fibres by a tool faced with needles. To make the fibres durable either the skins or the fibres are treated with an extract from the gastric juice and/or urine of the fish from which the skin is obtained, or by other preserving treatment, and the fibres are baled for transit. By grinding the fibres and mixing with a suitable cement such as glue obtained from chondropterygians and plagiostomes the product may be used as insulating means for electricity, heat, and moisture, and, with the addition of formaldehyde and the application of great pressure, a hard material suitable for gramophone discs and the like, is obtained.
