Description
Title: Improvements Relating To Hinges
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a hinge and more particularly but not exclusively to a hinge for hinging a wing in a frame.
Glazed constructions typically are constructed from pvc-U sections.
Such sections are provided with a longitudinally extending groove to receive fittings such as hinges, espagnolettes, cockspur handles and the like, as necessary for the construction.
Conventional hinges have a pair of hinge members with at least one of the hinge members having a projection which locates in the groove, positively to locate the hinge. Whereas the groove size is standardised, and the groove is commonly known as the Eurogropve, the exact position of the groove transversely of the section profile may vary depending on the configuration of the section. Thus hithertofore hinges have had to be designed to be specific to a particular pvc-U section.
Also, tolerances allowed for in the manufacture of a hinged casement window for example, relative to its. frame, can mean that a hinge, even one specific to the section may not fit as well as is desirable.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide a hinge including first and second members connected together for hinging about a hinge axis, the first member being adapted to be secured to a frame and the second member being adapted to be secured to a wing, the first and/or second member having a part which in use is received within a receiving recess of the frame or wing characterised in that the part which in use is received in the receiving recess is adjustable laterally relative to the hinge axis.
Thus a hinge is provided which may be adapted for use with a variety of wing and frame constructions, by adjusting the position of the adjustable part so that for a variety of receiving recess positions, the adjustable part may be received in the recess.
Preferably the first and/or second member having the adjustable part includes a plate-like element mounting the adjustable part. Thus fastening means may be provided which permit the lateral position of the adjustable part to be adjusted relative to, and then fastened to, the plate-like element. Such fastening means may pass through slotted openings in the plate-like element into engagement with the adjustable part, the slotted openings extending transversely to the hinge axis.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a hinged assembly including a hinge according to the first aspect of the invention, the first member being secured to a frame and the second member being secured to a wing, with the adjustable part in a recess of the wing or frame.
The wing may for examples be a window casement or a door.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :
FIGURE 1 is a side cross-sectional view of a hinged assembly having a hinge in accordance with the invention in a closed condition;
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the hinge shown in figure 1 in an exploded condition ;
FIGURE 3 is a side view of the hinge of figures 1 and 2 shown in an exploded condition.
Referring to the drawings, a hinge 10 for hinging a wing 11 in a frame 12 comprises a first member 13 adapted to be secured to the frame 12 and a second member 15 adapted to be secured to the wing 11, the first and second members 13, 15 being connected by a hinge pin 17 so that the first and second members 13,15 can relative pivot about a hinge axis A.
In this example the frame 12 is made up of pvc-U sections each having a body 18 with an internal upstand 20, and the wing 11 too is made up from pvc- U sections each having a body 22 and an external upstand 23. When the wing
11 is closed in the frame 12, the wing 11 closes against the internal upstands 20
of the frame 12, and the upstands 23+ of the wing 11 close against the frame 12,
there being appropriate seals (not shpwn) provided in seal grooves 25,26 in the
upstands 23,20 of the wing 11 frame 12.
In another arrangement the frime 12 may be arranged with the upstand
20 externally so that the wing 11 opens inwardly rather than outwardly. The
'wing 11 may be a window casement,'or a door or the like as desired.
The wing 11 has provided i1 an edge surface 28 thereof, a receiving
recess 29 which comprises a so callelI"Eurogroove", which is of a standardised
size to receive door and window furniture such as hinges, handles and
espagnolettes. The second hinge mdrnber 15 has a part, known as a dog 30,
which is received in the Eurogroove, 29 to locate the hinge 10 relative to the
wing 11.
The dog 30 is mounted on a plate-like element 31 of the second hinge member 15, which member 15 further comprises a second element 32 which
extends transversely to the plate-like element 31 along the inside of the wing
upstand 23, and a third element 33 which extends transversely to the second
element 32 beneath the wing upstand 23, although in alternative orientations to
that shown in the drawings, the thirci element 33 may extend above or to the
side of the wing upstand 23.
In the example shown, the plate-lié element 31, and the second and third elements 32, 33 are provided integrally, for example as a single pressing in metal, but alternatively, one of other : of the second and third elements 32, 33 may be separate and secured together.,
The third element 33 has a pait of leafs 34, 35 one towards each end of the third element, which leafs 34, 35 provide mountings (hexagonal openings) 37 for the hinge pin 17 which has correspondingly (square) shaped end regions, and a circular cross section mid part which is journalled in the first hinge member 13 which is secured e. g. by fastenings 39 to an outwardly facing surface 41 of the frame 12.
For different manufactures'pvc-U profiles, the distance of the
Eurogroove 29 from inwardly 42 and outwardly 43 facing surfaces of the wing 11 can vary. Hence at least so far as hinges are concerned, it is usual practice for hinges particular to a manufacturers'profile to be made which obviously is inconvenient and costly. In any event, manufacturing tolerances can mean that a hinge does not comfortably fit in the correct position for hinging a wing 11.
In accordance with the invention, the position of the dog 30 is adjustable relative to the hinge axis A laterally of the plate-like element 31, so that varying distances from the Eurogroove 29 to the inwardly and outwardly facing surfaces 42,43 of the wing 11 can be accommodated.
To achieve this conveniently the plate-like element 31 has several slotted openings 46 aligned longitudinally of the plate-like part 31, with threaded openings 47 in the dog 30. Thus using threaded fasteners (not shown) the dog 30 and plate-like part 31 can be connected together whilst the position of the dog 30 relative to the plate-like element 31 and hence hinge axis A, can be varied to suit different profiles.
The dog 30 has further openings 50, one or more may be slotted longitudinally. The dog 30 may thus be secured in the Eurogroove 29 by fasteners (not shown) which pass through openings 50 and co-operate with the body 22 of the wing 11 and/or with a reinforcement member (not shown) which may be provided within the profile, prior to the dog 30 being mounted on the plate-like element 31. However if desired, the plate-like element 31 may have openings for fasteners which co-operate with the body 22 of the wing 11.
The plate-like element 31 has provided thereon teeth like serrations 51 which may be arrange to dig into the edge surface of the body 22 of the wing 11 around the Eurogroove 29, as the dog 30 and plate-like element 31 are connected together. However, preferably the dog 30 is sized so that the teeth like serrations 51 are clear of the edge surface of the body 22 of the wing 11, but the dog 30 too has such serrations 52 which co-operate with the serrations 51 of its mounting, to prevent any movement between the dog 30 and its mounting 31.
Various modifications may be : made without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example the first hinge tnember 13 could in another example be secured to an edge surface 53 of the frame 12 rather than the outwardly facing surface 41 shown, in which case the second hinge member 15 would need to be of an alternative configuration.
The dog 30 need not be of the elongate continuous configuration shown but could be provided by a serie of dog elements which locate in the
Eurogroove 29 or any other receiving recess of the wing 11.
Instead of or additional to the second hinge member 15 having an adjustable dog 30, the first hinge member 13 may have an adjustable dog 30 which may locate in a Eurogroove or, other receiving recess of the frame 12
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilise for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
