Abstract
A heat exchanger (1) for exchanging heat between first and second fluids. A heat exchanger housing (2) defines an inner wall which may be of circular cross section in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the housing. A stack of spaced apart parallel plates (3) is received within the housing (2), each plate (3) extending in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis. Edges (5) of the plates (3) are interengaged to define seals (6) such that one space (7) of each adjacent pair of spaces (7, 8) communicates with an inlet and outlet for the first fluid and the other space (8) of the pair of spaces (7, 8) communicates within an inlet and an outlet for the second fluid. One inlet is located at each end of the tubular housing, and one outlet is located at each end of the tubular housing such that each fluid travels along the length of the housing between the respective inlet and outlet. The width of the plates (3), that is the plate dimension in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, varies with the distance of the plate (3) from the longitudinal axis such that edges (5) of the plates (3) extending parallel to the longitudinal axis about an inner surface of the tubular housing (2). Adjacent plates (3) may be formed by folding a single strip of material, or adjacent plates (3) may be formed from separate strips of material edges (5) of which overlap to define the necessary seals (6).
