Abstract

A safety braking system of a pram/pushchair comprises a brake bar 13 pivoted on handle 12 and connected by a cable 9 to a pivoted lever 5 carrying a brake pad 4, and a spring 10 for biassing the lever 5 in the clockwise direction about its pivot 6. The brake pad is held by the cable away from the wheel tread for as long as the brake bar is held against the handle, and when the brake bar is not held against the handle, the spring biasses the lever to force the brake pad onto the wheeltread to prevent the wheel from turning.

Description

Safety Breaking System This invention relates to a safety braking system for prams and pushchairs. Prams and pushchairs are well known for transporting babies and small children and need to be subject to the same safety features for braking as any other vehicle; in particular the person pushing the pram/pushchair should have constant control. At present, prams/pushchairs have a separate braking system operated independently by foot or hand involving a time lapse between the pram/pushchair stopping and being secured.
The present invention provides immediate immobilisation of the pram/pushchair. The present invention also prevents the pram/ pushchair continuing to move forward should the person pushing the pram/pushchair become incapacitated, lose control or inadvertantly let go of the pram/pushchair.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a typical pram/pushchair handle with the brake bar of the safety braking system.
Figure 2 shows a typical pram/pushchair frame with the braking system.
Referring to the drawing (Fig 1) showing the pram/pushchair handlebar 12 connected to which is the brakebar 13 by rods inserted into the handlebar 12 which allow the brakebar 13 to move up and down.
The brake cable 9 runs from the brakebar 13 into a block 14.
From the block 14 the brake cable 8 enters the hollow handlebar 12 travelling down through the handlebar 12 to the main brake assembly shown in Fig 2.
Referring to drawing (Fig 2) it shows the braking system where connected to the main frame 1 of the pram/pushchair. From the main frame 1 a bar 11 protrudes which is permanently welded to the main frame. Another bar 5 is connected to, and pivots upon, bar 11. On bar 5 a spring is connected to the handlebar 12.
On the end of bar 5 is a fixed brake block 4 which is adjacent to the outer edge of the wheel.
On the upper end of bar 5 is the connection to the inner cable 9 which runs inside a block 7.
The brake cable 8 runs out of block 7 and then runs inside the handlebar 12.
On the main frame 1, to which the wheel axle 2 is connected, the brake block 4 runs onto the wheel tread 3 to prevent the wheel from turning.
To prevent the brake block 4 from rubbing against the wheel tread 3 the brake handle must be held against the handlebar 12.
If the brake handle is released the spring forces the brake block 4 onto the wheel tread 3 to prevent the wheel from turning.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A safety braking system comprising a brake barwhich swivels upon the handlebar of a pram/pushchair, means for connecting the brake bar by a cable to a brake pad next to the wheel tread, the brake cable being provided with a spring and lever in a position to force the brake pad onto the wheel tread when the brake bar is not held against the handlebar.
  2. 2. A safety braking system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein means are provided on the handlebar to handles of prams/pushchairs for a handbrake to immobilise the wheel of prams/pushchairs.
  3. 3. A safety braking system as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein means are provided of arresting the turning of a wheel on a pram/pushchair when the person pushing it lets go of the handlebar or handles.
  4. 4. A safety braking system as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein the cable connected to the lever holding the brake pad is threaded inside the handlebar of the pram/ pushchair or is connected by means other than a cable.
  5. 5. A safety braking system as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 or Claim 4 which is attached to a disabled persons wheelchair.
  6. 6. A safety braking system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein brake pads are provided for at least two wheels.
  7. 7. A safety braking system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the brake cable is attached to the outside of the handlebar or handles of prams/pushchairs.
  8. 8. A safety braking system substantially as described herein with reference to Fig 1 and Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing.
