Abstract
A waterproof cap suitable for reducing heat loss from the head of a person in the sea has a lining of thermal material. the cap may have lined ear flaps 2 which can either be secured under the chin or retained in a raised position by filamentary hook fastener material. The rear of the cap is adjustable to fit different head sizes by means of the same fastening material. The cap may be stowed in a waterproof pouch attached by the same fastening material to a life jacket. Both cap and pouch may carry fluorescent strips.
Description
Description
I Timothy Clive Taylor, have been working onboard ships for the past twentyfive years, I am a professionaI magicianlillusionist, I have invented many items over the years in connection with my profession, and have often wondered why the description below has never been implemented within the shipping industry.
In these present times where safety at sea is becoming more and more paramount, especially with the introduction of SOLAS, more stringent lifeboat drills more frequent crew drills, improved safety standards, and better LIFE
PRESERVERS.
It is this last very important safety item I am going to bring to your attention.
A LIFE PRESERVER OR LIFE JACKET, is fitted with several safety features, floatation pads, florescent strips, a salt water activated light and of course a whistle to attract attention.
When attending Iifeboat drills all these features are highlighted to passengers.
Passengers are also advised to wear a head covering or cap, because in the event of a real emergency, and the passengers having to take to the water most of the bodies heat escapes through the head, thus stalling the onset of hypothermia. Sound advice you might think.
But what would happen in a real emergency? When the emergency signal is sounded. Many passengers might be unable to return to their cabins to collect their life preservers and head covering, they would have to make their way directly to the muster station, or life boats where extra life preservers are stored, but unfortunately no head covering !.
I believe that Shipping Companies should supply a head covering as a standard safety feature attached to every life preserver, and that is the reason I have designed and invented The Thermal Life Cap.
The Thermal Life Cap is a unique and well-designed head protection, which is waterproof and thermal, lined to help reduce the bodies heat escaping. In addition The Thermal Life Cap has the added protection of a fastening under the chin that would prevent the cap from coming off should a passenger or crew member have to jump into the water. It also provides ear protection, and florescent strips, as this would be the highest point, and more noticeable than on the life preserver. The Thermal Life Cap fits neatly into a small pocket which is attached to the life preserver.
I believe The Thermal Life Cap is vet another important way to improve exisffnz safety standards, and more important show passengers that their safety is the shinnin companies main concern.
Figure 1. A thermal-lined waterproof cap with ear flaps, to be worn with life jackets. A cap would be attached to each life-jacket. Shows ear flaps, which are thermal lined, worn up. Velcro fastening on top.
OAdjustable Velcro fastener at the back, enables one size to fit everyone.
Figure 2. Fabric sample Thermal fabric between two layers of waterproof fabric. Fluorescent strips to be attached.
Figure 3. Shows ear flaps, worn down. Velcro fastening under the chin. Cap rolls up and fits into a pouch which is attached onto the life jacket, see figure 4.
Figure 4. Shows rear view of the cap showing adjustable Velcro fastener and strap. The cap can be adjusted to fit anyone in seconds. The adjustable Velcro strip is very easy to fit in place.
Figure 5. Rectangular pouch for the cap. Cap is rolled up to fit inside. Dotted lines show position of Velcro on the back of the pouch and on the flap.
Figure 6. Shows two strips of soft side of Velcro stuck onto the jacket. Then the pouch is hooked on. Pouch attaches to the front of the life jacket. Hook side of Velcro on the back of the pouch. soft side of Velcro on the jacket (Glue or Sticky tape).
