Abstract

A combined set and suspension assembly with an integral, adjustable shock absorbing system that can be attached directly to any proprietory water ski for use in ski jumping and slalom competitions by disabled skiers.

Description

1 2340739 OSPRO-SKI, This invention relates to the sport of water skiing,
and in particular water ski jumping, for disabled people.
In this field it is already known that there are in current use water skis having a seat attached so allowing then to be used by water skiers suffering from paraplegia and/or injury to, or loss of, the lower limbs.
However, such skis have proved to be unstable and potentially dangerous to the user: the seats are too open and unsupportive, and the combined ski and seat unit is so inflexible and lacking In any kind of shock absorbing suspension that on striking the jump ramp the skier's body must take the entire shock of the impact, so making it extremely difficult to retain control of the ski. This not only reduces the skier's Jumping potential but also increases the risk of accident when the ramp is struck, whilst travelling Its length, and upon landing.
The present invention, OSPRO-SKI, comprises a partially-enveloping and cushioned seat with a separate Insert moulded to the shape of the skier and attached to a baseplate assembly incorporating a shock absorbing unit, the whole of which can be attached to any ski designed for water ski jumping. It can also be fitted to slalom skis.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and the numbering of the various component parts thereon. Drawing no.1 shows the invention in dismantled form and drawing no.2 shows the shock absorbing unit and pivoting support legs In assembled form.
1. High inpact-resistant, carbon fibre-reinforced fibreglass seat shell with cushioned finish, shaped to give support to and partial envelopment of the lower spine and buttocks.
2. Aluminium baseplate and fin Integral with the seat shell.
3. Expanded foam insert pre-noulded to suit individual skiers.
4. Cushioned under-knee support integral with seat.
5. Movable aluminium front legs fixed to both seat baseplate and ski baseplate and held in position by pivot pins and bolts.
6. Aluminium rear legs, as front.
