Description
2338892 SELF-TILTING A 1ION LOCKING MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIR
Field of this Invention
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A FULLY POSITION-ADJUSTABLE CHAIR WHICH CAN BE LOCKED IN A SET POSITION BY BODY WEIGHT AND CAN GIVE PROTECTION FROM WIND AND RAIN.
Background to tbia Invention
Many versions of garden seats already exist in the 'public domain' - each offering a reclining position of comfort and in some cases shade from strong sunlight.
Such chairs have to be taken indoors or placed under cover when it rains.
Similarly, the positions of adjustment are in one plane only - the chair can be raised to near vertical or lowered to a low reclining angle.
The first aspect of this invention comprises a chair body which is constructed on a spherical shape principle. The second aspect of this invention comprises a separate base to accept the spherical principle body which may be spiked into the ground or fixed by any other means. The third aspect of this invention comprises a comfortable seat below the base of which is a locking means which is operable by the weight of the person using the chair. The fourth aspect of this invention provides a means of position adjustment, forwards, backwards or to one side or the other.
1 SELF-m-TILTING AND POSITION LOCKING MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIR The fifth aspect of this invention comprises a hook- on leg and foot rest. According to the embodiment of this invention there is provided a relatively rigid, semi-spherical, partly encompassing item of furniture, namely a chair, which includes a comfortable, removable seat and a static supporting plinth or stand. The said chair has a spherical shaped base and rising therefrom, arm rests and a spherically shaped back rest and partly enclosing sides. The seat is preferably circular in outline shape which is comfortably padded and has fitted rigidly to its base a locking bar. Through the spherically shaped base of the said chair is provided a profiled aperture which wild accept the locking bar. The periphery of the seat is chamfered or angled so that the seat will fit easily and snugly into the chair. The chair fits on to a static stand or base about which it can move in any direction. Limitation to the extend of movement is controlled by the person sitting on the seat and by the locking feature of the seat bar.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 - illustrates the principal components comprising the multipurpose chair.
Figure 2 - shows the assembled chair on its stand or plinth.
2 SELETILTING AND POSITION LOCKING MULTI-PURPOSE CBAIR Figure 3 indicates a number of positions at which the chair might be set for use.
According to Figure 1, View la, there is shown a pictorial view of the chair element 10 which has a spherical shaped base 11 and centrally orientated through the base 11 is an elongate aperture 12 and groove 13. The sides of the said chair are curved slightly inwards and terminating at the top in a head shield 14 and at the lower position in arm rests 15. The construction of the said chair 10 is preferably in rigid, durable non-brittle plastic material but could be in aluminium or other light metal in another embodiment. The spherical-shaped base 11 permits the chair 10 to be moved in a spherical mode. Raising the weight of the body from the seat which would be placed in the chair 10 and adding a sideway, forward or backward effort from the body to the chair 10 it can be moved to any desired position on the static frame. View lb shows the seat 16 which is circular in outline shape to fit within the bowl or spherical shape of the chair 10. Projecting vertically downwards from a central position of the seat 16 is a locking bar 17. The seat 16 is constructed preferably in rigid reinforced plastic material but could be in light-weight metal or any other appropriate material in another embodiment.
3 SELF-TILTING AND POSITION LOCKING MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIR The seat 16 can be upholstered 18 or provided with any comfortable seating surface. The locking bar 17 will fit within an upstanding tubular socket located in the static stand or plinth later to be described. The peripherical edge of the seat 16 is angled inwards so that it may rest in the curved surface of the chair 10.
Referring now to View 1c, there is shown the static stand or plinth 19 upon which the chair 10 rests. The said stand 19 is preferably constructed in metal and is rust-proofed. The outline shape of the support ring 20 is circular and of a dimension to accept the spherical bowl 11 of the chair 10 in a balanced and secure mode.
The said stand 19 is preferably supported on three legs 21, but any number of legs would be acceptable in another embodiment. The legs 21 can be pegged into the ground or more securely bolted to hard-standing if found necessary. Projecting upwards from a central position below the support ring 20 is a tubular socket 22 which will accept the locking bar 17 from the seat 16. It can be seen that the seat 16 can be maintained at a level position within the chair 10, but the chair 10 can be moved sideways, backwards or forwards as desired. The tubular socket 22 is fixedly attached to the legs 21 by any convenient support means 23. View ld illustrates a hook-on foot and leg rest 24 which go is profiled suitably to provide a comfortable and secure reclining posture.
4 SELF-TILTING AND POSITION LOCKING MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIR The said rest 24 is supported at an appropriate angle from the chair 10 by a hingedly attached strut 25 which can be engaged with the static frame 19 at any appropriate angle.
The hook-on rest 24 can be constructed in light metal, rigid reinforced plastic or any other appropriate material.
It can be seen that the curved side members 26 of the said rest 24 will fit about thespherical bowl of the chair 10.
Referring now to Figure 2, View 2a, there is shown the assembled chair 10 on its static stand 19, but without the foot-rest 24.
The seat 16 is placed within the bowl of the chair 10 and the said chair 10 is relatively centralised on the static stand 19. The locking bar 17 of the seat 16 is shown within the socket 22. It will be appreciated from View 2a that the chair 10 could be moved forward, backwards or to either side within the static stand 19. It will also be accepted that had the foot and leg rest 24 been shown in View 2a, it would have masked the locking bar 17 and socket 22. The foot and leg rest 24 is shown hooked into the front of the chair 10 in View 2b which needs no further description.
Reference is now made to Figure 3 which presents line diagrams of some of the positions in which the chair 10 may be used and it will be appreciated that these positions and others may be obtained by exerting body pressure on the chair 10 while raising slightly from the seat 16. It will also be appreciated that the foot and leg rest may not always be required with the chair 10.
SELF-TILTING AND POSITION LOCKING MULTI-PURPOSE CHAIR Figure 3 requires no separate description. The static stand 19 remains stationary and may or may not be secured to the ground or hard-standing.
It should be noted that there is a limit to the extend of sideways, forward and backward movement of the chair within the stand 19. View 3f shows the underside view of the bowl of the chair 10 to clarify how the movement of the chair 10 within the stand 19 is restricted. It can be seen that the chair 10 can move about the seat 16 (to the extent) the locking IL25 bar 17 permits. The bayonet type catch or groove 27 would lock the chair from forward or backward movement and very limited sideways movement.

Claims (1)
- I A fully position adjustable chair which can be locked in a set position by body weight and can give protection from wind, rain and sun.2 A chair which consists of a spherical seat having a shaped back, the underside of the seat fits into a stand or base made in the form of a ring which holds and supports the seat while allowing it to tilt and swivel to a prescribed Emit.0 3 This limit is governed by a central tubular vertical pin having a locking flange on top and which locates within a cut out section of the underside of the seat sphere.4 Locking in any position is activated by pressure being applied to a seat disc having a stem or rod attached to the underneath and which locates inside pin (3.) and can slide vertically whilst keeping the seat disc in the horizontal plane at all times, Im A chair which can be locked in storage position and left outdoors in all weather.6 A chair as claimed made from metal plastic material or wood or a combination of those materials.
