Abstract

233,797. Hall, A. J., Barnes, J. O., and Ness, P. Feb. 16, 1924. Funnels.-Relates to funnels in which the supply of liquid to the bottle &c. is automatically stopped when the bottle is filled to the desired height and in which the funnel is automatically closed when it is removed from the bottle &c. The funnel is of the type in which the filling-tube 3 connected to the cup 1 of the funnel carries a pin 11 adapted to slide in a slot 10 in an outer tube 4 having a flange 5 to rest on the top of the bottle during filling, a float 8, cone-shaped at its upper end and open below, engaging when the bottle is filled to the desired height with a seating on the tube 3 to stop the flow of liquid. An exchangeable sleeve 6 inserted loosely in the upper end of the tube 3 forms the seating for the float 8 and determines the quantity of liquid to be run into the bottle. The tube 3 is screwed into the cup 1, and the sleeve 6 is supported by an angular flange 7 resting on the top of the tube 3. During filling, a ball valve 13 rests on a support 14 on the outer tube 4, and when the funnel is removed from the bottle the ball engages a seating 12 on the lower end of the tube 3 and prevents the escape of liquid. Rows of corrugations 15 formed by inwardly indenting the tube 3 form guides for the float 8, which normally rests on a transverse pin 9 in the tube 3. Radial grooves 16 or the like in the flange 5 allow air to escape from the bottle during filling.
