Abstract
A support assembly for mounting functional units of a motor vehicle comprises at least two longitudinal members 2a,3a,4a extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and connected by at least one cross member 5. Both the longitudinal and cross members 2a,3a,4a and 5 comprise light-metal extrusions with the axis of extrusion for all the members being oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle. Each longitudinal member can be made up of a number of interlinked extrusions 2a,3a,4a.
Description
Support assembly for mounting functional units
of a motor vehicle
The invention relates to a support assembly for mounting functional units of a motor vehicle, which support assembly can be connected to a body supporting structure and comprises at least two longitudinal-member sections, which run in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle - with respect to an installed state on the motor vehicle - as well as at least one cross-member section, which connects the longitudinalmember sections to one another and is oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle - with respect to the installed state on the motor vehicle.
Such a support assembly is generally known as an integral support for a front-end region of a monocoque motor-vehicle body. Such an integral support has two longitudinal-member sections, which are rigidly connected to one another by one or more cross-member sections to form a frame. This frame-like integral support is put onto two front-end longitudinal members of the monocoque vehicle body from below and fastened to the latter. The integral support serves to mount functional units, in particular to mount a drive unit and to mount the steering mechanism and a front-end axle arrangement.
It is also known (DE 37 22 490 C2) to provide a floor structure for a motor-vehicle body with a supporting framework of longitudinal members and crossmembers, the longitudinal members and cross-members being designed as extruded profiles. In this case, the extruded profiles of the longitudinal members are oriented in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and the extruded profiles of the cross-members are oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle. The cross-members are undetachably connected to the longitudinal members via fastening flanges.
The present invention seeks to provide a support assembly of the type mentioned at the beginning which is designed in a lightweight type of construction with simple means and, in addition to high stability, has high functionality.
According to the present invention there is provided a support assembly for mounting functional units of a motor vehicle, which support assembly can be connected to a body supporting structure and comprises at least two longitudinalmember sections, which run in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle - with respect to an installed state mounted on the motor vehicle - as well as at least one crossmember section, which connects the longitudinal-member sections to one another and is oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle - with respect to the installed state on the motor vehicle, wherein both the longitudinal-member sections and the at least one cross-member section are light-metal extruded profile parts, the extrusion profile being oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle.
This results in a lightweight type of construction, which, depending on the design of the extruded profile parts, also permits considerable functional diversity in addition to high stability. Owing to the fact that the longitudinal-member sections also constitute extruded profiles oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle, the corresponding profile parts can be adapted to the respective functional and constructional conditions, in which case different profiled portions arranged in particular one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle may also be provided with a relatively large overall height, which is not possible in the case of an extruded profile oriented in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle according to the prior art. Since both the at least one cross-member section and the longitudinal-member sections are oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle, the at least one crossmember section can be fitted into the longitudinal-member sections in a positive-locking manner, as a result of which further increased stability of the entire support assembly is obtained.
In a further development of the invention, each longitudinal-member section is composed of at least two light-metal extruded profile parts joined together in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. This development is related in particular to manufacture, since it has hitherto only been possible to design wide extruded profiles to a limited extent. By a plurality of extruded profile parts being joined together side by side and thus one after the other in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, the respectively desired length of each longitudinal-member section is achieved.
In a further development of the invention, the light-metal extruded profile parts are provided with integrated push-in profiled regions for the positivelocking connection of the longitudinal-member sections to one another and/or to the cross-member section. A positive-locking connection between longitudinal-member sections and cross-member sections is thereby achieved, and this positive-locking connection permits high stability. In this case, the individual light-metal extruded profile parts are fitted together along imaginary push-in axes oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle.
In a further development of the invention, the light-metal extruded profile parts are additionally connected to one another in a rigid manner in the push-in profiled regions by undetachable joining techniques. As a result, the stability of the joint regions is further increased. Undetachable joining techniques are, in addition to riveted joints, in particular welded, brazed or adhesively bonded joints.
In a further development of the invention, the opposite open faces of the light-metal extruded profile parts are at least partly closed by closing-plate arrangements. As a result, the stiffness of the individual longitudinal-member and cross-member sections is further increased.
In a further development of the invention, the extruded profile parts are provided with mounting surfaces for the attachment of fastening parts and functional parts. As a result, especially high variability of the extruded profile parts is achieved by virtue of the fact that they can perform additional fastening functions.
In a further development of the invention, the light-metal extruded profile parts are designed as hollow profiles provided with stiffening ribs. According to the specified requirements, the light-metal extruded profile parts can thus be adapted to the technical and functional specifications.
Further advantages and features of the invention follow from the claims and the description below of a preferred embodiment of the invention, which is shown with reference to the drawings.

member section being on the left in the normal direction of travel.
A support assembly according to Figs. 1 to 3 constitutes an integral support for a front-end region of a monocoque vehicle body for a passenger motor vehicle. The integral support has two longitudinal-member sections 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c, which run in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and are connected to one another via a cross-member section 5. The cross-member section 5 runs in the transverse direction of the vehicle. The orientations described of the longitudinalmember sections and the cross-member section correspond to the arrangement of the integral support in its installed state mounted in the front-end region of the vehicle. The integral support serves to mount a drive unit as well as a steering mechanism and a front-end axle arrangement and can be connected to a supporting structure of the frontend region of the motor-vehicle body via screwed connections in such a way as to transmit force. The integral support 1 is produced in a lightweight type of construction, both the longitudinal-member sections 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b and the cross-member section 5 being produced from light-metal extruded profile parts.
Each longitudinal-member section 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b is joined together from three extruded profile parts 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b, each extruded profile part having a longitudinal profile axis running in the transverse direction of the vehicle (Fig. 3). Each extruded profile part 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c is designed as a multi-chamber hollow profile, a plurality of stiffening and guide ribs being provided in each case. The three extruded profile parts 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c can be connected to one another via two push-in connections S1, S2, which are formed by respectively integrated push-in profiled portions integrally formed on opposite side sections. The push-in profiled portions facing one another in each case are made in an appropriately corresponding manner in order to enable the extruded profile parts 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c to be fitted together in a positive-locking manner along imaginary push-in axes running in the transverse direction of the vehicle. In addition, the extruded profile parts are welded to one another in these push-in connection regions Sl, S2 in a manner not shown in any more detail. The extruded profile parts 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c are cut to length in accordance with the desired width for the longitudinal-member sections and are cut in a bevelled, stepped or skewed manner in sections in accordance with the predetermined outer contours. In addition, by appropriate machining, mounting surfaces are created for fastening elements 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, which are rigidly connected to the longitudinal- and cross-member sections 2, 3, 4, 5 preferably by welding. The fastening elements serve to retain mounting or support parts of the functional units or to attach the support assembly 1 to the corresponding supporting structure of the front-end region.
In addition to the push-in connection of the extruded profile parts for the longitudinal-member sections 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c, the cross-member section 5 is also held in the front (in the direction of travel F) extruded profile parts 4a, 4b, 4c by a positive-locking push-in mounting. To this end, the extruded profile parts 4a, 4b, 4c have profiled mounting portions A, which are adapted to the outer contour of the extruded profile part 5 and are designed in such a way that the extruded profile part of the cross-member section 5 can be pushed into a secure position in the transverse direction of the vehicle. In addition, welding is also effected between the cross-member section 5 and the extruded profile parts 4a, 4b, 4c. However, especially high demands are no longer made on such a welded joint due to the positive-locking mounting in the profiled mounting portions A.
The faces, open opposite one another in each case, of each extruded profile part 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c are closed by closing-plate arrangements 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 22, the closing-plate arrangements being connected to the corresponding extruded profile parts 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c by welds in such a way as to transmit force. In addition to the increase in stiffness, the closingplate arrangements also prevent contamination of the cavities of the extruded profile parts.
The extruded profile parts 2a, 3a, 4a; 2b, 3b, 4b; 2c, 3c, 4c are each provided with at least one profiled portion which is raised in a hump-like manner and serves as a fastening block for attaching the respective longitudinal-member section to a corresponding front-end longitudinal member of the supporting structure of the body shell. The fastening elements and mounting surfaces serve to secure engine mounts and axle receptacles as well as other functional parts.
Claims (8)
- Claims 1. A support assembly for mounting functional units of a motor vehicle, which support assembly can be connected to a body supporting structure and comprises at least two longitudinal-member sections, which run in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle - with respect to an installed state mounted on the motor vehicle - as well as at least one cross-member section, which connects the longitudinal-member sections to one another and is oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle - with respect to the installed state on the motor vehicle, wherein both the longitudinal-member sections and the at least one cross-member section are light-metal extruded profile parts, the extrusion profile being oriented in the transverse direction of the vehicle.
- 2. A support assembly according to Claim 1, wherein each longitudinalmember section is composed of at least two light-metal extruded profile parts joined together in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.
- 3. A support assembly according to Claim 2, wherein the light-metal extruded profile parts are provided with integrated push-in profiled regions for the positive-locking connection of the longitudinal-member sections to one another and/or to the cross-member section.
- 4. A support assembly according to Claim 3, wherein the light-metal extruded profile parts are additionally connected to one another in a rigid manner in the push-in profiled regions by undetachable joining techniques.
- 5. A support assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the opposite open faces of the light-metal extruded profile parts are at least partly closed by closing-plate arrangements.
- 6. A support assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the extruded profile parts are provided with mounting surfaces for the attachment of fastening parts and functional parts.
- 7. A support assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the light-metal extruded profile parts are hollow profiles provided with stiffening ribs.
- 8. A support assembly for mounting functional units of a motor vehicle, substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
