Abstract

Colour due to humic material in water is removed by subjecting the water to cross-flow filtration. The filtration membrane is an ultrafiltration or microfiltration membrane, with pores of about 10 000 MWCO up to about 0.5 Ám, and is preferably of inorganic material such as zirconia on a porous substrate. The process removes colour, particulates, and micro-organisms in a single step, and achieves adequate permeation rates.
