Abstract

Valves, arrangement of; compressing plant, general arrangement of.-In a high-pressure gas compressor of the kind described in Specification 467/14, a chamber is provided near to the part of the cylinder at the end of the suction strode, and ports or passages in the sleeve valve coact with the chamber to admit a supplementary gas supply at or near the end of the suction stroke. The apparatus may be applied in refrigerating apparatus where the same compressor is used in the manufacture of ice and the storage of comestibles or for other purposes involving different supply pressures. The cylinder 1 is provided with two annular chambers 2, 2<a>, the former coacting with ports 6 and 6<a> in the sleeve valve according to the position of the piston. When only one supply pressure is available, the two chambers may be connected by opening a valve 9 in a connecting passage 8. The delivery valve 15 may be replaced by an additional ring of ports in the sleeve. When two cylinders constitute a compressor, the space between them may be utilized as the gas chamber.
