Abstract

A furniture cylinder lock comprises a housing 10 secured to the back plate 9 of a furniture fastening mechanism 4, and a core 18 which has a journal 21 for operating the mechanism when the core is turned by a key. The housing has increased diameter portions 12, and 16 respectively receiving a front flange 19 of the core and for holding a fixing ring 27. When the core is inserted into the housing projections 24 on the journal displace an inwardly directed conical portion 35 of the fixing ring 27 to move behind a stop face 33 thereof to resist core removal.

Description

2324569 -I- Furniture lock
Description
The invention relates to a furniture lock comprising a lock box with a lock housing in which there are arranged actuating means for one or several bolts and which is closed by a lock ceiling, and having a closing cylinder with a cylinder housing and a cylinder core, with the cylinder housing being connected to the lock ceiling by connecting means and with the cylinder core, by means of its outer face, being rotationally adjustably supported in a bore of the cylinder housing between an open position and a locked position around a longitudinal axis and furthermore, with the cylinder core being held against a contact face in the region of the free end of the cylinder housing by means of a collar in one direction of the longitudinal axis and in the other direction of the longitudinal axis by fixing means arranged at the other end of the cylinder housing and supported on the cylidder housing and on the cylinder core and furthermore, with the cylinder core, at the latter end, comprising a journal with coupling means which, for the purpose of establishing a connection with the actuating means, engage the lock housing and furthermore, with the fixing means comprising a fixing ring with first catching means engaging a bore step of the cylinder housing, as well as second catching means at the journal of the cylinder core, which means engage one another.
DE 43 15 187 Cl describes a locking cylinder for furniture. In one direction of the longitudinal axis, the cylinder core rotatably inserted into the cylinder housing is supported relative to the cylinder housing by means of a collar. A fixing ring serves as securing means in the opposite direction thereto. For this purpose, the f ixing ring, by means of a tab, engages an aperture in a journal formed on to the cylinder core, which aperture extends transversely to the longitudinal axis. When the cylinder core is rotationally reset, the fixing ring in the above embodiment also has to be made to rotate by means of a key. This type of design makes it necessary for the cylinder core to be fitted before the cylinder housing is connected to the lock box. In consequence, this assembly for fixing the cylinder core is preferably used for locks in the case of which the above procedure causes no problems or where all the lock components can be fitted jointly. However. in the case of furniture where the locking cylinders are not to be fitted until the furniture has been erected in a room, for example in order to be able to use the same key for all the pieces of furniture in one room, additional assembly measures are required.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to propose a furniture lock which permits the lock box together with the cylinder housing of the locking cylinder firmly associated therewith to be attached to the furniture first, with the cylinder core being fitted therein at a later stage, for instance at the same time when the furniture is erected, simply by inserting the cylinder core into the cylinder housing.
In accordance with the invention, the objective is achieved in that the fixing ring comprises a cylindri- cal ring portion which, by means of its outer face, is received in the bore step between a step face of the cylinder housing and the ceiling to which the cylinder housing is secured, as well as a conical sleeve portion which, by means of its end comprising the greater crosssection, is connected to the end of the ring portion associated with the step face and whose free end face forms the first catching means and serves as a supporting face for at least one projection radially projecting over the outer face of the journal and which constitutes the second catching means.
This means that the fixing ring is already firmly associated with the cylinder housing and caught between the latter and the ceiling of the lock box. Because of the design selected, there is no need for a special rotational position of the cylinder core relative to the cylinder housing or fixing ring to connect same to one another; indeed, the fixing ring secures the cylinder core relative to the cylinder housing.
The proposed embodiment makes it possible to provide a piece of furniture with a cylinder core subsequently, after the lock box with the cylinder housing for the locking cylinder has already been fitted.
According to a further embodiment of the invention it is proposed that, at least in the region of its free end face, the conical sleeve portion is radially elastically deformable.
The projection/s causes/cause a deformation of the conical sleeve portion in the radial direction, thus enabling the projections to pass the fixing ring and in consequence the conical sleeve portion. After the cylinder core has been fitted, the deformed portions of the conical sleeve portion spring back into their original position, so that the free end face and the corresponding locking face of the projections are positioned opposite one another, thus providing anti-extraction means. The fixing ring remains in a position of rest relative to the cylinder housing. The cylinder core, when reset, rotates in the cylinder housing relative to the fixing ring. To ensure this and to provide a sufficiently large amount of material behind the free end face for preventing extraction, the conical sleeve portion is provided with a cylindrical bore portion towards its free end face. The journal of the cylinder core passes through said cylindrical bore portion with radial play. The material for the fixing ring is preferably polyoxymethylene (POM). This material permits the fixing ring to be produced by injection moulding.
Advantageous assembly conditions and anti-extraction means are achieved in that, towards the free end face of the fixing ring, the projection comprises a radially extending blocking face, and facing away from said blocking face, said projection comprises an opening face which rises from the outer face of the journal.
When inserting the cylinder core, the rising opening face comes to rest against the inner conical face of the conical sleeve portion and deforms same in the process of being inserted further. The inclined position of the opening face helps to limit the forces required for deformation purposes.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is diagrammatically illustrated in the drawing wherein Fig. 1 Fig. 2 is a section through the locking box and locking cylinder assembly attached to a door leaf.
in a reduced scale, shows the locking cylinder in an exploded view, partially in section.
Figure 1, in section, shows the door leaf I with its front face 2 and its rear face 3. From the front face 2 to the rear f ace 3 there extends a receiving bore 5. The lock box 4 to which the locking cylinder 6 is securely connected is attached to the rear face 3. Said locking cylinder 6 extends through the receiving bore 5 towards the front face 2, so that, from the front face 2 it is possible to insert a key for operating the locking cylinder 6. The lock box 4 is attached to the rear face 3 so as to rest thereon and can be provided in the form of a bolt lock, rotary bar lock or the like. The lock housing 7 accommodates actuating means 8 for such bolts and is closed by the lock ceiling 9 arranged towards the rear face 3.
The description below also refers to Figure 2. The cylinder housing 10 associated with the locking cylinder 6 and arranged in the receiving bore 5 is securely connected to the lock ceiling 9 by journals 10, formed on to the cylinder housing 10. The cylinder housing 10 is provided with a bore 15 which is centred on the longitudinal axis 11 and which, starting from the end face 14 arranged towards the front face 2, is provided with a recess 12 which has a greater diameter than the bore 15 and which, in the region of transition to said bore 15, comprises a contact face 13 which extends at a right angle relative to the longitudinal axis 11. A bore step 16 is worked into the cylinder housing 10; it starts from the end face facing the lock ceiling 9, also has a greater diameter than the bore 15 and, towards the bore 15, comprises a step face 17 which extends radially relative to the longitudinal axis 11. The cylinder housing 10 serves to receive the cylinder core 18 which, by means of its outer face, is rotatably received in the bore 15. Towards the front face 2, the cylinder core 18 is provided with a collar 19 which engages the recess 12 starting from the end face 14 and which, by means of its supporting face 20, comes to rest against the contact face 13 of the cylinder housing to secure the cylinder core 18 in the direction of the longitudinal axis towards the lock box 4 to prevent same from being displaced. Furthermore, the cylinder core 18 is provided with a journal 21 which starts from its end face facing away from the collar 19 and whose diameter is reduced relative to the outer f ace of the cylinder core 18 in which there are arranged the recesses for receiving and guiding the faces for locking the cylinder core 18 relative to the cylinder housing 10. The outer face of the journal 21 has been given the reference number 22. To extend the journal 21, there are provided journal-shaped coupling means 23 which serve to establish a connection with the actuating means 8 for the bolt(s) of the lock box 4 and which, in the fitted condition, extend together with the lock box 4 into the housing 7 through an opening in the lock ceiling 9. For fixing the cylinder core 18 in the direction of extraction, i.e. in the direction of the front face 2 of the door leaf 1, there is provided d f ixing ring which cooperates with catching means provided at the journal 21 and with the cylinder housing 10. The catching means at the journal 21 are provided in the form of projections 24 (two in the embodiment described) which radially project beyond the outer face 22 of the journal 21 and which, towards the collar 19, are provided with a radially extending blocking f ace 25 and, towards the lock box 4, with an opening face 26 which rises at an angle from the outer face 22 towards the collar 19. The opening faces 26 can form part of the conical sleeve faces.
In the space enclosed between the lock ceiling 9 and the step f ace 17 on the one hand and the bore step 16 as well as the outer journal face 22 on the other hand, there is arranged the fixing ring 27. The fixing ring 27 comprises a cylinder-like ring portion 28 whose outer face 29 is non-rotatingly received in the bore step 16. Furthermore, the ring portion 28, by means of its end faces 30, 31, is immovably held between the lock ceiling 9 and the step face 17 of the cylinder housing in the direction of the longitudinal axis 11. From the inside of the region of the ring portion 28 which is provided with the end face 30 resting against the step face 17, there starts a conical sleeve portion 32 which is tapered towards the lock box 4, which ends in the end face 33 and which is provided with a cylindrical bore portion 34 which starts from said end face 33 and extends towards the collar 19 and which, towards the outer face 22 of the journal 21, comprises radial play so that the cylinder core 18 is able to rotate freely relative to the fixing ring 27. The conical bore portion 35 serves as a stop face for the opening faces 26 of the two projections 24 when the cylinder core 18 is fitted from the end face 14. When the opening face 26 approaches the conical bore portion 35, load is applied in that the respective wall portions of the conical sleeve portion 32 are deformed radially outwardly, so that the projections 24 are able axially to pass the fixing ring 27. As soon as the cylinder core 18 has reached its end position as illustrated in Figure 1, the deformed part of the conical sleeve portion 32 springs back radially inwardly, so that blocking faces 25 and the end face 33 are positioned opposite one another and prevent the cylinder core 18 from being extracted along the longitudinal axis 11 towards the front face 2. Design and arrangement of the fixing ring 27 and of the projections 24 allow the fixing ring 27 and the cylinder housing 10 to be securely connected to one another and jointly to be associated with the door leaf 1, prior to f itting the cylinder core 18. It is thus possible, subsequently, to provide a suitable cylinder core to allow several pieces of furniture to be locked by the same key, after the furniture has been erected.
