Abstract
A fastening comprising a bolt 10 with a threaded median portion 18 of a first diameter and a threaded end portion 20 of a second lesser diameter, wherein the thread of the end portion 20 is of opposite hand to the thread of the median portion 18. The median portion 18 is adapted to receive a main securing nut and the end portion 20 is adapted to receive a locking nut. In use, any undesired slackening of the main securing nut causes tightening of the locking nut and detachment of the main securing nut is prevented. The fastening is particularly suited for use as a wheel stud for a road vehicle.
Description
IMPROVED THREADED FASTENING
This invention relates to threaded fastenings, particularly but not exclusively vehicle road wheel securing studs.
A recurring problem with road vehicles, particularly heavy goods vehicle, buses and the like having substantial axle loads and running for long periods at sustained speeds, is the tendency of wheel stud nuts to work loose in service. It is clearly of utmost importance from a safety view that the wheels of any vehicle are absolutely secure.
Even with optimum standards of maintenance and care in tightening wheel nuts to predetermined torque settings there have been instances of unexplained loosening, in some cases leading to loss of a wheel. The risks are greater when corners are cut on maintenance, unfortunately often the case in heavy transport where margins are tight and competition is fierce.
The object of the invention is to provide a threaded fastening giving positive security against loosening or loss once tightened in a particularly simple and reliable manner without requiring special skills or equipment, and which is economical to manufacture and operate in service.
According to the invention there is provided a threaded fastening comprising a bolt or stud having a male threaded shank, said shank having a median portion of a first overall diameter threaded to receive a main securing nut having a complementary female thread, and a distal end portion of second lesser overall diameter sized to permit the securing nut to pass thereover without engagement of its internal thread, said end portion being threaded opposite handed to the median portion to receive a secondary securing nut having a female thread complementary to that of the end portion; whereby, in use, unintended slackening rotation of the main nut will be stopped by transmission of torque to the secondary nut in its direction of tightening.
An example of the invention is now more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a road wheel securing stud.
A road wheel assembly of, for example, a heavy goods vehicle will comprise a wheel hub journalled on the vehicle axle in conventional manner and provided with a number of axially projecting studs 10 for detachably mounting the wheel rim (not shown) and tyre.
Each stud 10 has a base portion 12 comprising a flange part 14 which is the largest diameter part of the stud and a threaded termination 16 which is permanently attached to the hub.
The remaining part of the stud is a shank 17 extending axially from flange part 14 on which the wheel is located and secured.
Shank 17 has a median portion 18 bounded at one end by flange part 14 and having a male thread engaged in use by a main securing nut, a generally standard wheel nut which will be tightened against the wheel rim centre in the usual way.
On heavy vehicles the wheel studs respective to the wheels at its opposite sides are commonly threaded oppositely handedly, those on one side having a right hand thread and those on the other side having a left hand thread with a view to the direction of rotation of the wheels in forward travel tending to tighten rather than loosen the respective nuts, although this, in itself, does not always ensure that slackening does not occur in service. In the drawing a right hand threaded stud is shown.
The remaining distal end portion 20 of shank 17 is of reduced diameter so that the main securing nut can be passed along it on assembly without any threaded engagement.
Portion 20 has a male thread of opposite hand to the thread of the adjacent median portion 18 and, once the main nut has been fully engaged on portion 18 a secondary securing nut, threaded complementary to portion 20 will be tightened onto the latter.
Preferably the secondary nut will be in face to face abutment with the outer end of the main nut and tightened against to a predetermined torque setting after the main nut has likewise been tightened against the wheel.
In this way the secondary nut has the effect of a conventional lock nut arrangement, however, its security is much greater than the latter because any tendency of the main nut to slacken on median portion 18 will apply torque to the secondary nut on portion 20 in a direction of rotation tightening the latter so that it is practically impossible for any slackening or loosening to take place.
Even if assembly has not been carried out carefully, for example in an extreme situation where both nuts were left slack, loosening rotation of the main nut would eventually bring it into abutment with the secondary nut driving the latter in the tightening direction. This would make loss of the main nut impossible so that, even if the wheel was loose, it could not leave the hub.
The presence of the two nuts on the stud is readily apparent even on a cursory visual inspection, and the presence of the extra nut will add very little to the labour and time involved in wheel changes, no special or additional tools are needed beyond a standard set of wrenches or sockets to fit both sizes of nut.
The use of the invention may avoid the need to provide oppositely handed threaded studs on opposite sides of the vehicle as referred to above, so simplifying assembly and reducing manufacturing costs and component stocking.
The dimensions shown on the drawing are by way of example only and it will be appreciated that various proportions and dimensions may be employed according to requirements.
While the invention has primary application to vehicle wheel studs it is contemplated that it may be used in other assemblies where secure threaded fastening is needed, for example headed bolts may be supplied having shanks formed as above to receive the opposite handed threaded nuts.
