Abstract

A microphone/audio mixer, eg for unbalanced microphones, in which the mixing of any number of microphones M1,2,3...Mn linked only by a single audio cable is achieved by using a virtual earth mining circuit which is physically divided at the virtual earth point, so that each summing resistor R1,2,3...Rn is housed in a separate input unit, the input units being linked together by a single audio line to the summing point of the mixer circuit in the master unit, the output of which carries the mixed signals to the input of any sound system.

Description

Microphone/Audio Mixer This invention relates to a microphone/audio mixer.
In conference, seminar & similar situations where a sound reinforcement or audio frequency induction loop system (AFILS) is in use, it is ideal if every person speaking has his or her own microphone in order to minimise the adverse effects of room acoustics and to achieve optimum performance from the systems in use. This is very important for hearing impaired people who may be listening via the AFILS, using their hearing aids switched to "T".
However, the use of multiple microphones or other audio equipment requires multiple cables and multiple input mixing facilities. This can be relatively expensive and cumbersome to install, especially in portable systems which may have to be installed in various venues and removed after use. Microphone & audio signals can be mixed to an audio amplifier via a single cable linking each source by employing advanced digital technology or other methods, but these systems are complex and expensive.
According to the present invention, the mixing of any number of microphone or audio inputs linked only by a single audio cable is achieved by using a virtual earth mixing circuit which is physically divided at the virtual earth point, so that each summing resistor is housed in a separate input unit, input units being linked together by a single audio line to the summing point of the mixer circuit in the master unit, the output of which carries the mixed signals to the input of any sound system.
A specific basic embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is the schematic diagram of the system in the simplest form, for unbalanced microphones. Each microphone Ml,2,3....Mn plugs into its own input unit which contains the summing resistor R1,2,3...Rn of the virtual earth mixer.
The input units are connected in daisy-chain fashion by a single audio cable to the summing point of the virtual earth mixer in the master unit which contains the rest of the virtual earth mixing circuit.
The master unit may be connected between any point in the daisy-chain and the sound system.

Claims (4)

  1. Microphone/Audio Mixer
Claims 1. An audio mixer in which the mixing of any number of microphone or audio inputs, linked only by a single audio cable, is achieved by using a virtual earth mixing circuit which is physically divided at the virtual earth point, so that each summing resistor is housed in a separate input unit, the input units being linked together by a single audio line to the summing point of the mixer circuit in the master unit, the output of which carries the mixed signals to the input of any sound system.
  2. 2. A microphone/audio mixer as claimed in 1, in which the master unit is incorporated in a sound system amplifier.
