Abstract
An emergency alarm is embodied in the re-chargeable battery pack (5) for a portable telephone handset. The battery pack (5) includes a housing (6) of which a part (7) houses the re-chargeable cells. Contacts (9) enable the cells to power the handset when the pack (5) is latched into position on the handset by latches (10,12,14). Within the housing (6), alarm circuitry is incorporated which includes an alarm unit connectable to be energised by the cells (7) upon operation of a push button switch (18). The alarm unit may emit an audible and/or a visual alarm signal. In the case where the alarm signal is an audible one, apertures (20) for emission of the sound may be provided. In use, the user may carry the battery pack in their car or hand bag as a spare for their telephone handset. In the event of an attack or threat of an attack, they can activate the alarm by means of the push button (18).
Description
EMERGENCY ALARMS
The invention relates to emergency alarms. More specifically, the invention relates to portable emergency alarms which, in the event of an emergency such as physical attack, can be operated by the person carrying the alarm to produce an immediate alarm indication, such as an audible or visual alarm.
According to the invention, there is provided an emergency alarm, comprising a battery pack primarily intended for removable connection to and for powering other, portable, apparatus, the battery pack including an electrically energisable alarm unit and switch means on and operable externally of the battery pack to energise the alarm unit from the battery pack to emit an alarm indication.
According to the invention, there is further provided an emergency alarm in the form of a removable battery pack for a portable telephone handset, the battery pack comprising a housing, electrical cell means within the housing, contact means on and externally of the housing for connecting the cell means to energise the handset, electrically operative alarm means within the housing, and switch means on and externally of the housing and operable to connect the alarm means to the dell means for electrical energisation thereby to produce an alarm indication.
Emergency alarms embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective underside view of one form of alarm;
Figure 2 is a perspective top view of the alarm of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a schematic circuit diagram.
The emergency alarm to be described is in this example implemented in the removable battery pack of a mobile telephone handset (not shown). The battery pack is shown at 5 in Figures 1 and 2. The housing 6 of the battery pack has a main body 7 containing the battery cells 8 (see Figure 3). The cells 8 may be re-chargeable cells. Alternatively, they may be primary (nonre-chargeable) cells. If they are re-chargeable cells, they may be re-chargeable in situ or removable for re-charging. Contacts are shown at 9 which, when the battery pack is mounted in position on the telephone handset, connect the battery cells to power the handset. In addition, the telephone handset itself may, under certain circumstances, act as a charger for the cells in the battery pack if the cells are of the re-chargeable type and the charging power for the battery pack will be fed to the cells via the contacts 9. These contacts can also be used for charging such cells by means of a purpose-built charger (not shown) into which the battery pack can be clipped.
A latching system incorporating latches shown at 10,12 and 14 is provided to enable the battery pack to be clipped securely to the handset.
In addition, and in accordance with the invention, the battery pack has alarm circuitry (see Figure 3) which is incorporated into the battery pack 5. As shown in Figure 3, the alarm circuitry is energised from the cells 8 of the battery pack and comprises an alarm unit 16 and a switch 18. The alarm unit 16 is incorporated within the housing 6. The switch 18 is shown in
Figure 2, mounted on the outside of the housing 6 and preferably in the form of a push button. The cells 8 are of course also connected to the normal circuitry within the battery pack.
The alarm unit 16 may be of any suitable type. Preferably, however, it is an audible or sonic alarm which, when activated, emits a loud noise to deter any attacker and/or to attract the attention of any one nearby. In this case, the battery pack can be provided with apertures 20 through which the alarm noise is emitted.
The alarm unit 16 could be, or include, a visual alarm, such as to emit a rapidly flashing light. The light would obviously be mounted on the external surface of the battery pack.
In this way, the user can carry the battery pack in their car or hand bag for use as a back-up power source for the telephone if and when its battery pack fails or becomes discharged. Thus, the spare battery pack would be immediately available if the person becomes threatened and could be activated by pressing the button 18. The button 18 can be positioned on the battery pack so that it is externally accessible when the battery pack is in position on the telephone (and powering the telephone). Thus, the alarm could still be actuated in such circumstances.
The invention may be embodied in battery packs whose primary use is for some other purpose (that is, other than for powering a portable telephone handset).
Claims (16)
1. An emergency alarm, comprising a battery pack primarily intended for removable connection to and for powering other, portable, apparatus, the battery pack including an electrically energisable alarm unit and switch means on and operable externally of the battery pack to energise the alarm unit from the battery pack to emit an alarm indication.
2. An alarm according to claim 1, in which the battery pack includes replaceable cell means.
3. An alarm according to claim 1, in which the battery pack includes re-chargeable cell means.
4. An emergency alarm in the form of a removable battery pack for a portable telephone handset, the battery pack comprising a housing, electrical cell means within the housing, contact means on and externally of the housing for connecting the cell means to energise the handset, electrically operative alarm means within the housing, and switch means on and externally of the housing and operable to connect the alarm means to the cell means for electrical energisation thereby to produce an alarm indication.
5. An alarm according to claim 4, in which the cell means is replaceable.
6. An alarm according to claim 5, in which the cell means comprises re-chargeable cell means.
7. An alarm according to claim 6, including contact means on and externally of the housing for connecting the cell means to charging means for re-charging the cell means.
8. An alarm according to any one of claims 4 to 7, in which the housing includes mechanical latching means for securing the housing to the telephone handset.
9. An alarm according to any one of claims 4 to 8, including one or more apertures in the housing for transmitting the audible signal from within to outside the housing.
10. An alarm according to any preceding claim, in which the alarm indication is or includes an audible signal.
11. An alarm according to any preceding claim, in which the alarm indication includes a visual alarm signal.
12. A portable telephone handset incorporating an alarm according to any one of claims 4 to 9.
13. A handset according to claim 12, in which the alarm indication is or includes an audible signal.
14. A handset according to claim 12 or 13, in which the alarm indication includes a visual alarm signal.
15. An emergency alarm, substantially as described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
16. An emergency alarm, substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
