Abstract
The boiler accepts a burner head joined to a burner (3) for the combustion of e.g. kerosene natural gas, liquid petroleum gas, or gas oil, the burner having a flange (4) with a recess (5) to receive a gasket (6) of circular cross-section. A face (7) of flange (4) mates with a flat face (8) on the boiler housing surrounding a combustion inlet leading to the burner head. The gasket (6) is interposed between face (7) and face (8) and is compressed by tightening a nut (11) onto a single threaded stud (12) welded on the boiler housing. The stud and nut are positioned above the combustion chamber for easy access and apply sufficient force to compress the gasket, forming a gas tight seal.
Description
IMPROVED BOILER/BURNER
SEALING JOINT
This invention relates to an improved sealing joint for a boiler and more particularly to ajoint to seal the connection between a fuel burner and a boiler.
In existing boilers a burner for the boiler combustion fuel has a flange formed at its outlet which is bolted to a corresponding flange formed on the boiler body, the joint being sealed by a gasket. This conventional seal is maintained by a series of studs located around the flanges which are locked together by nuts which compress the gasket, thus forming the seal and preventing leakage of gases from the burner and the burner head of the boiler.
An aim of the present invention is to provide an improved seal which is of simple construction and reduces the number of component parts forming the seal.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a sealed joint between two mating surfaces, one mating surface being a flat surface and the other mating surface a flange, wherein the flange has a locating recess for a gasket interposed between the two mating surfaces, the seal being formed by bolting the flanged surface to the flat surface.
Conveniently, the bolting of the flange is by means of a threaded nut screwed onto a threaded stud on the flat surface.
Preferably the gasket is circular. Alternatively, the gasket has a rectangular periphery with a circular central hole.
In one construction the flange has a circular periphery.
Alternatively the outer periphery of the flange if rectangular.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a boiler connected with a fuel burner by a sealed joint as set forth in the three preceding paragraphs.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of boiler and fuel burner;
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged view of the parts encircled in
Figure 2.
The improved seal, according to the invention, is described, with reference to a combustion boiler 1 the burner head 2 of which is joined to a burner 3 for the combustion fuel, e.g., kerosene natural gas, lpg or gas oil.
The burner has a flange 4 with a recess 5 to receive a gasket 6 of circular cross-section (see Figure 3). The face 7 of flange 4 mates with a flat face 8 on the boiler housing 9 surrounding a combustion inlet 10 leading to the burner head 2. The gasket 7 is interposed between the flange face 7 and the flat face 8 and is compressed by tightening a nut 11 onto a single threaded stud 12 welded on the boiler housing 9. The stud and nut are positioned above the combustion chamber for easy access and apply sufficient force to compress the gasket, forming a gas-tight seal.
The flange and gasket may take various forms. For example, the flange 7 may have a circular periphery, or alternatively may have a rectangular periphery 7a. Similarly, the gasket 6 may have an annular shape with a circular periphery, or alternatively a rectangular periphery 6a with circular central hole 6b as shown in dotted line in Figure 1.
It will be appreciated that the improved gasket seal with single threaded stud and nut and a single flange not only reduces the number of component parts and hence manufacturing cost, but also reduces the assembly time and the subsequent maintenance costs.
