Abstract

A control system for use with a perfect binding machine (10). The machine (10) comprises a transfer carriage (12) adapted to carry a book block (18), a detector (50) issuing a first signal in response to detection of the leading edge of the book block (18), a speed sensor (52) issuing a second signal indicative of the velocity of the book block (18). Control means control the application of adhesive to the book block (18) during a time determined by the first and second signals. An apparatus (20) for the machine (10) including a guide (21) with a fixed upstanding sidewall (25) and a movable sidewall (26) is also disclosed.
