Description

PIPE CONNECTING ADAPTOR Field of the invention The present invention relates to a pipe adaptor, in particular an adaptor for connecting an inlet pipe of a given size selectively to one of a plurality of outlet pipes of different sizes.
Background of the invention The present invention concerns the connection of polymer (e.g.
polyethylene) gas service pipes for the compressed air supply to a grundomat (mole). With existing arrangements, there is a need to reverse the mole and insert the service pipe through the hole made by the mole. This is time consuming and difficulties associated with insertion of the service pipe may arise.
Previously, use was made of external fittings to make the connection between the service pipe and the mole, which required the use of spanners and grips. Only one size of pipe could be installed using this method and two copper pipe inserts and olives were used on each service pipe. These were not re-usable.
In some circumstances it can be desirable to select service pipes of different sizes, but this desire cannot be accommodated with the present arrangements.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide an adaptor for connecting an inlet pipe of a given size selectively to one of a plurality of outlet pipes of different sizes, which adaptor can be used in a cost effective and efficient manner.
According to the invention, there is provided an adaptor for connecting an inlet pipe of a given size selectively to one of a plurality of outlet pipes of different sizes, the adaptor comprising a body having a bore therethrough, the body having a head portion and a tail portion, wherein the head portion includes means for connection to an inlet pipe, characterised in that the tail portion comprises a plurality of cylindrical regions of decreasing external diameter considered in the direction away from the head portion, each cylindrical region having means for connection to a selected outlet pipe.
The use of the adaptor according to the invention, avoids the need to reverse the mole and insert the service pipe through the hole made by the mole, since the mole can be removed from the service pipe at the receive evacuation ready to be connected into the gas supply system. This reduces time and any difficulties associated with insertion of the service pipe. The adaptor according to the invention is re-usable.
Each adaptor can be made to cater for the range of pipe sizes likely to be encountered in a particular application.
While the term "inlet pipe,, is used herein for the relatively rigid pipe which is to be connected to the head portion of the adaptor and the term "outlet pipe" is used for the relatively resilient polymer service pipe which is to be connected to the tail portion, the adaptor may also be used in the reverse sense, with fluid flow passing in the opposite direction. The terms "inlet" and 'outlet" as used herein are to be interpreted accordingly.
The head portion may have an internal threading to enable the head portion to be connected to the externally threaded portion of the inlet pipe.
Preferably, the head portion includes an internal annular shoulder for abutment with an end face of the inlet pipe, to enable a fluid-tight connection to be made.
The outer surface of the head portion may have a circular cross-section. Alternatively, the outer surface of the head portion has a polygonal cross section, the latter being useful where the adaptor is to be screwed onto the threaded end of the inlet pipe.
In one embodiment of the invention, the means for connection of the tail portion to a selected outlet pipe comprises annular ridges, in particular reverse cut ridges provided on each cylindrical region of the tail portion.
The invention will now be further described, purely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fgure 1 is an isometric view of a pipe adaptor according to a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 shows an end elevation of the pipe adaptor shown in Figure 1, from the head end; Figure 3 shows an end elevation of the pipe adaptor shown in Figure 1, from the tail end; Figure 4 is a side elevation of the pipe connector 5 shown in Figure 1; Figure 5 is a section taken on the line V - V in Figure 4; and Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 4, of a pipe connector according to a second embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figures 1 to 5, there is shown an adaptor 10 for connecting an inlet pipe 12, such as from a compressed air supply, formed of a relatively rigid material such as steel selectively to one of a plurality of outlet service pipes 14, 15 of different sizes formed of a relatively resilient material such as a polymer, in particular polyethylene. The adaptor 10 comprises a body 16 having a bore 18 therethrough.
The body 16 has a head portion 20 and a tail portion 22.
The head portion 20 is provided with an internal threading 21 to enable the head portion 20 to be connected to the externally threaded portion 32 of an inlet pipe 12. The head portion 20 includes an internal annular shoulder 23 for abutment with an end face 36 of the inlet pipe 12. The outer surface of the head portion 20 has a polygonal cross-section.
The tail portion 22 comprises two cylindrical regions 26, 27 of decreasing external diameter considered in the direction away from the head portion 20. Each cylindrical region has reverse-cut annular ridges 30 for connection to a selected polymer service pipe 14, 15. The service pipe can be secured to the adaptor by use of inexpensive Jubilee clips (not shown).
In the alternative embodiment shown in Figure 6, three cylindrical regions 26, 27, 28 of the tail portion are provided, enabling the adaptor to be connected selectively to one of three service pipes of different sizes.
