Abstract
230,880. Marks, E. C. R., (Wade & Butcher Corporation). Oct. 16, 1923. Cutting-edges, shaping and treating; band apparatus.-A machine for polishing knives &c., in such a manner as to remove abradant marks, comprises means for supporting the articles between parallel belts which move transversely of the articles, and for giving the article a longitudinal motion across the belt, whereby transverse abradant marks are removed. The machine comprises a bed 17 supporting, on pulleys 25, 26 and 27, 28 respectively, two pairs of belts 21, 22 and 23, 24, which are moved by rotation either of pulleys 25, 27 or of all the pulleys. The pulleys 25, 27 are, mounted on shafts 29, 30 carrying meshing gears. The shaft 29 is driven, through worm-gearing 35, 36 and chain gearing 40, from a main shaft 42. When the pulleys 26, 28 also are driven, this is effected from the shafts 29, 30 by bevel-gearing 63, 64, 58, 59. The knives are supported to lie between adjacent parallel runs of the belts by supports 68, secured to bars 69, 70, 71 carried by cross heads 72, 73. Each support carries a number of knives 102 held by screws 78, Fig. 4, clamping their tangs in blocks 74 mounted loosely on studs carried by the support. The knives are reciprocated vertically between the belts by movement of the cross heads on posts 79 by means of connecting-rods 82 and adjustable throw cranks 83 carried by shafts 85 driven from the shaft 42 by gearing 87, 88. The belts are pressed against the knives by tongues 96 cut in a plate 95 and pressed up to the belt by springs 94 carried by studs 93 supported on a bar 89 supported from the bed 17 by brackets 90, or the belts may be pressed by spring pressed blocks carried by the bars 89. Abrasive material, namely flower of emery and thick oil, is supplied by the knife blades 102 dipping into troughs 101 supported by brackets. A device for holding the cross heads raised during loading and unloading comprises a shaft 103 carried in bearings 104 and rotated by a handle 105 whereby an arm 109 with a recess 112 is brought to such a position that the recess is engaged by a pin 108 mounted on a flange carried by a sleeve 106 encircling freely the shaft 103. Rubber and like apparatus.-In modification, the belts are not endless belts but are attached at their ends to cross heads which are reciprocated on bars by levers.
