Abstract

230,026. American Appliance Co., (Assignees of Smith, C. G.). March 1, 1924, [Convention date]. Thermionic amplifiers, detectors, and generators.-An ionized gas or vapour discharge tube for use as a rectifier, relay, detector, or oscillationgenerator has one or two anodes, a source of electrons which is separated from the anodes bv an enclosure having an aperture through which the electron discharge passes, the gas or vapour being maintained at different pressures inside and outside the enclosure. In the oscillationgenerator shown in Fig. 6, two anodes 41 are connected through windings 45, 46 of a transformer, a choke coil 48, and a battery 44, with the cathode 22. An aperture 43 is provided in the top of the cathode. One secondary winding 51 is connected in series with a variable condenser 50 and winding 52 producing a magnetic field controlling the discharge. The load 53 is connected with another secondary 54. In the relay or detector shown in Fig. 10 an anode 112 is mounted above an aperture 111 and within an extension of the cathode chamber 110. Another anode 117 is mounted opposite an aperture 115, and is surrounded by a control electrode 122, and connected through an output transformer 119 and a battery 118 with the cathode. The discharge between the anode 112 and the cathode 110 ensures energization of the cathode when the current in the. anode 117 is negligible. The second'ary of the input transformer 121 is connected between the cathode and the control electrode 122. In a modified' relay or detector the cathode is surrounded bv a cylindrical anode having a longitudinal slit to reduce eddy current loss, and the discharge is controlled by an axial magnetic field produced by a winding mounted around the envelope and connected in series with the secondary of the input transformer.
