Abstract
A glazing assembly 100, for example for a shop window, has a frame 104 and a pair of beading members 106, 108 anchored to the frame 104, for example by screws 110, 112. The two beading members 106, 108, essentially of L-shape, define a U-shaped channel 116 in which the peripheral margin 118 of a pane of laminated glass 102 is bonded, preferably by automotive adhesive 14a, 14b. A method is also disclosed in which adhesive 14a is applied to limb 120 of bead 106, pane 102 is mounted so as to be in contact with adhesive 14a, adhesive 14b is applied to the marginal portion of pane 102 and bead 108 mounted so as to be in contact with adhesive 14b. The beads 106, 108 are screwed together through their limbs 124, 126 and anchored to the frame 104.
Description
GLAZING ASSEMBLY
The invention relates generally to glazing assemblies and in particular to those which offer protection for buildings against burglary.
Glazing in shops, offices and similar business premises, for windows, doors etc., commonly comprises a pane of glass mounted in a frame made, for instance, of stainless steel, aluminium or wood. The glass is usually held captive in a U-shaped channel formed, say, between two metal beading members, and the gap between the glass and each of the members is sealed with, for example, a plastics material strip or silicone compound.
Shops and offices are extremely susceptible to burglary, and it is well known for burglars to gain access by breaking the glass in windows or doors. To improve protection against burglary, windows and doors may be fitted with glazing materials having a high resistance to penetration, such as, for example, anti-bandit glass which typically consists of a three-ply laminate having outer glass plies separated by a 1.5 mm thick polyvinylbutyral (PVB) interlayer.
Installing anti-bandit glass has, however, been shown simply to shift the point of weakness in a conventional glazing assembly: the force of repeated blows on the glass, which would if it were merely annealed or toughened be sufficient to result in it breaking, are, because of the resistance offered, transferred to the frame. If the frame is unable to keep the glass captive under such force, it may be urged out in one piece, thereby providing a burglar access.
A glazing assembly is therefore required which offers further improved protection against burglary.
The invention provides a glazing assembly comprising a frame, a U-shaped channel defined by at least one beading member secured to the frame and a pane of laminated glass, wherein the peripheral margin of the pane is bonded in the channeL
Bonding the pane in the channel enhances the ability of the assembly to maintain its mechanical integrity by assisting in keeping the glass captive whilst under attack by a burglar.
The pane is preferably bonded in the channel with automotive glazing adhesive of the type used for bonding vehicle front- or back-lights to metal bodywork, for instance, the adhesive available in the U.K under the trade mark BETAMATE E 2700 from Gurit-Essex UK Limited. The term "automotive glazing adhesive" when used herein includes any adhesive capable of functioning as an automotive glazing adhesive whether or not automotive glazing is its intended use.
The channel is preferably at least 38 mm deep which is considerably deeper than the depth of channel used in conventional glazing assemblies. The depth of channel is indicative of the width of the beading member which has to be sufficiently large to enable it to sustain the force transmitted through the glass as a result of an attack by a burglar without failing.
The laminated glass may include a PVB intedayer. Preferably the PVB interlayer is at least 0.76 mm thick and further preferably it is at least 1.5 mm thick (classed as anti-bandit glass). Alternatively, the laminated glass may include a layer of polycarbonatc.
Glazing assemblies according to the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a shop window incorporating a first embodiment of the invention; Flgurc 2 is a partial cross section taken along the line n-II in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a partial cross section, similar to that shown in figure 2, of a shop window incorporating a second embodiment of the invention.
With reference to figures 1 and 2, a shop window indicated gencrally at 1, incorporating a first embodiment of the invention, has an extruded aluminium frame 4, first and second stainless stecl beading members 6, 8, a pane of laminated anti-bandit glass 2 and a cover strip 40.
The first, outer beading members 6 is substantially L-shaped in cross-section, and has a vertical leg 20 and a horizontal leg 24. The second, inner beading member 8 is substantially C-shaped in cross-section, and has a vertical leg 22, a lower horizontal leg 26 and an upper flange 28. The horizontal leg 26 of the inner member 8 is shorter than the horizontal leg 24 of the outer member 6 so that when the inner member 8 overlies the outer member 6 with the ends of the overlying legs 24, 26 aligned, a U-shaped channel 16 is defined by the two vertical legs 20, 22 and the intervening portion of the horizontal leg 24 of the outer member 6.
The pane of anti-bandit glass 2 is made up of two plies of 3 mm thick clear annealed float glass separated by a 1.5 mm interlayer of PVB (not shown). The peripheral margin 18 of the pane 2 is bonded in the channel 16, which is 38 mm deep, with BETAMATE E 2700 automotive glazing adhesive 14.
The assembly 1 is constructed as follows: the interior surface of the vertical leg 20, the intcrior surface of the vertical leg 22 and both major surfaces at the peripheral margin 18 of the pane 2 are prepared in readiness for bonding. Adhesive 14a is applied using an applicator gun to the interior surface of the vertical leg 20, and the pane 2 is presented so as to bring the outer of the two peripheral marginal surfaces into contact with the adhesive covered leg 20. Further adhesive 14b is optionally applied to the inner of the peripheral marginal surfaces and the interior surface of the vertical leg 22 is brought into contact with the inner marginal surface in such a way that the horizontal legs 24, 26 of the beading members 6,8 abut one another.The inner and outer beading members 6,8 are screwed together through their horizontal legs 24, 26 and anchored to the frame 4 via a washer 38 by socket head cap screws 10 (only one shown in Figure 2). The assembly 1 is completed by attaching the cover strip 40, which is also substantially shaped in cross section. The cover strip 40 is fixed by scrtws 34 (only one shown in Flgurc 2) on to the flange 28 and is arranged so as to cover the inner beading member 8 thereby hiding the anchoring screws 10 and neatening the appearance of the assembly 1. External cover plates 30,32 are also attached to the assembly 1 for neatness.
With reference to figure 3, a shop window indicated generally at 100, incorporating an alternative embodiment of the invention, has a wooden frame 104, first, outer stainless steel beading members 106, a second, inner stainless steel beading member 108 and a pane of anti-bandit glass 102.
The inner and outer beading members 106,108, are both substantially L-shaped in cross-section, and each has a vertical leg and a horizontal leg 120,122,124,126, but the horizontal leg 126 of the inner member 108 is shorter than the horizontal leg 124 of the outer member 106 so that when the inner member 108 overlies the outer member 106 with the ends of the overlying legs 124,126 aligned, a U-shaped channel 116 is defined by the two vertical legs 120,122 and the intervening portion of the horizontal leg 124 of the outer member 109.
The peripheral margin 118 of the pane 102 is bonded in the channel 16, which is 38 mm deep, with BETAMATE E 2700 automotive glazing adhesive 14.
The assembly 100 is constructed as the same manner as the assembly 1 described with reference to figures 1 and 2, to the extent of the application of adhesive 114 and the bringing together of the inner and outer beading members 106,108, except that pairs of dome head screws 110,112 (only one pair shown in figure 3) are used to screw the inner and outer beading members 106, 108 together and to the frame 104.
Claims (14)
1. A glazing assembly comprising a frame, a U-shaped channel defined by at least one beading member secured to the frame and a pane of laminated glass, wherein the peripheral margin of the pane is bonded in the channeL
2. A glazing assembly according to claim 1 wherein the glass is bonded in the channel with automotive glazing adhesive.

4. A glazing assembly according to any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the laminated glass includes a PVB interlayer.
5. A glazing assembly according to claim 4 wherein the PVB interlayer is at least 0.76 mm thick
6. A glazing assembly according to claim 4 wherein the PVB interlayer is at least 1.5 mm thick.
7. A glazing assembly according to any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the laminated glass includes a layer of polycarbonate.
8. A glazing assembly according to any preceding claim wherein the channel is defined by two beading members.
9. A glazing assembly according to claim 8 wherein the first of the two beading members is substantially Gshaped in cross-section and the second of the two beading members is substantially C-shaped in cross section with the second beading member overlying the first beading member.
10. A glazing assembly according to claim 9 further comprising a cover strip which is arranged so as to cover the second beading member.
11. A glazing assembly according to claim 8 wherein the first and second beading members are both substantially Lshaped in cross-section with the second beading member overlying the first beading member
12. A method of making a glazing assembly according to any of claims 1 to 11.
13. A glazing assembly substantially as herein described with reference to the figures 1 and 2 or figure 3 of the drawings.
14. A method of making a glazing assembly substantially as herein described with reference to figures 1 and 2 or figure 3 of the drawings.
