Abstract

A security mechanism for a hinged closure member comprises an element fixed to the closure member and an element fixed to the frame for the closure member, the elements being arranged to interengage by the closure of the closure member into the frame. One of the elements may comprise a plate 14 with an opening 13 therethrough and the other element may comprise a projecting part 12 arranged to be engaged in the opening 13 when the closure member is in a closure condition. The plate 14 may be attached to the frame or the closure member. The opening 13 and the projecting part 12 are preferably of rectangular configuration.

Description

LOCKING MECHANISM This invention relates to a locking mechanism and, more particularly, to a locking mechanism for locking a closure member to a fixed frame.
Locking mechanisms are well known in the art for locking the free end regions of a hinged closure member with a frame for the closure member. In such locking mechanisms the locking element is displaceable towards and into engagement with the closure member only whilst said closure member is in a closure condition.
The present invention seeks to provide a locking mechanism for locking the hinged edge of a closure member to a frame for the closure member, to increase the security of the closure member when said closure member is in a closure condition.
According to the present invention there is provided a locking mechanism for a hinged closure member comprising an element attached to the closure member and an element attached to the frame for the closure member, said elements being arranged to inter engage to a locking condition by the closure of the closure member into the frame.
In one preferred embodiment one of said elements comprises a plate with an opening therethrough.
Preferably the other of said elements includes a projecting element arranged to be engaged in the opening in the first element when the closure member is in a closure condition.
In one embodiment the plate with the opening therethrough is attached to the frame but in another embodiment the plate with the opening therethrough is attached to the closure member.
Preferably the opening, and the projecting element engagable therein, are of rectangular configuration.
In one preferred embodiment the closure member includes a recess and the locking element attached to the closure member is located in said recess to protect the locking element against attack by a hack saw.
In an alternative embodiment the frame may include a plate element to engage, or to be spaced closely to, the hinged edge of the closure member when the closure member is closed, again to avoid the use of a hack saw for cutting the projecting element.
The invention will now be described further by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings in which: Fig 1 show a prospective view of the elements of a locking mechanism in accordance with the invention.
Fig 2 shows a cross section through a closure member, viewed along the pivoted axis for the closure member, locked into a frame by the locking mechanism of Fig 1, and Fig 3 shows a cross section, similar to that of Fig 2, through the locking mechanism fitted to a frame and closure member, with the closure member in a partially opened hinged condition.
In the example illustrated in Fig 1 a backing plate 11 has a rectangular block 12 projecting from one major face lla of the element 11. The block 12 is rigidly attached to the plate element 11.
The block 12 is displaceably engagable into an opening 13 in a second plate 14 when the locking assembly is in a locking condition. The locking plate 11 includes two holes llb therethrough, by which the plate 11 may be firmly attached to part of a closure structure by screws (not shown), and the plate 14 also includes two holes 14 by which the second plate 14 can be firmly attached to the other part of the closure structure as by screws (not shown).
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig 2 and Fig 3 the plate 14 is secured to a window frame 15 and, via a hinge 16, a window closure member 17 is pivotally attached to the frame 15.
In such an embodiment, with the plate 14 attached to the frame 15 and the plate 11 attached to the pivoted closure 17, the block 12 is progressively entered into the opening 13 in the plate 14, as the closure member 17 hinges towards the frame 15, thus locking the window 17 with the frame 15 to resist displacement of the window 17 from its closure condition.
As will be seen from Fig 3, with a block 12 a clearance fit in the opening 13, the frame 17 can be pivotally displaced from its closure condition to its open position and from its open condition to its closure condition without any obstruction from the block 12.

Claims (9)
