Abstract
The retainer rail (7) has a first undercut holder (9) for fastening of the hood cover (2), and a second separate holder (11) for a seal (10). A fastener section (12) is located on the rail offset relative to the holders, for fastening of the rail to the profile (6). The retainer rail is formed by extruded profiles. The first holder is formed by a longitudinal groove (14) with narrow insertion aperture (13). An edge section (16) of the hood cover has a thickened part (15), and is retained in the groove.
Description
1 2295360 "Collapsible or Folding Top for Vehicles such as Convertibles or
the like" The invention relates to a collapsible or folding top for vehicles such as convertibles or the like, with a top covering secured to parts of a supporting frame attachable to a vehicle.
A collapsible or folding top for a convertible with a top covering secured to sections of the supporting top frame is known from EP 0 509 326 Al, in which shaped strips are sewn directly onto the corners of the edges of the top-covering portions to be secured to the sections, the shaped strips extending substantially exclusively below the sections and - adapted in shape thereto - in the longitudinal direction thereof and being screwed thereto by means of a respective holding rail.
The holding rail is placed on the shaped strip and is screwed thereto, the shaped strip being clamped tightly between the section and the holding rail.
This arrangement has the disadvantage that the separate manufacture of the shaped strip and the holding 2 rail results in substantial costs, and that the assembly of the top covering and the sealing member takes up a considerable time.
An object of the invention is to provide a collapsible or folding top in which the fastening of the top covering to a part of the top frame and the mounting of a sealing member in this area is simplified and less costly.
Claims (1)
- The invention provides a collapsible or folding top as claimed in Claim 1.The advantages mainly achieved by the invention are that the arrangement of a holding rail comprising two separate receiving means and one separate fastening portion allows the number of components for securing the top covering and for receiving the sealing member to be reduced and the assembly time at the conveyor belt to be considerably shortened at the same time, since the sealing member is already insertible into the receiving means of the holding rail outside the conveyor belt. The top covering can be secured to the top frame rapidly and easily with this manner of fastening, since adhesive joins are dispensed with completely.3 An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:Fig. 1 is a perspective view from behind of a collapsible or folding top of a convertible, and Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.A collapsible or folding top 1 comprises a supporting frame (not shown in detail) and a resilient covering 2 secured thereto. A rear window 3, which can be formed by a rigid or flexible window panel, is provided in the rear, transversely extending area of the collapsible or folding top 1.Fig. 2 is a section through a front, transversely extending end area 4 of the collapsible or folding top 1, the end area 4 adjoining an adjacent fixed windscreen frame 5 of the convertible when the top is closed. The front, transversely extending end area 4 of the collapsible or folding top 1 comprises a section 6 which is formed by a casting of large area produced from light metal and on which the top covering 2 rests at least in part.4 The top covering 2 extends around the front outer edge of the section 6 and is held in position on the underside 8 of the section 6 with the interposition of a holding rail 7. The holding rail 7 comprises a first undercut receiving means 8 for fastening the top covering 2 and second receiving means 11 formed separately therefrom and receiving a sealing member 10. In addition, a fastening portion 12, on which the holding rail 7 is secured to the section 6, is provided offset from the two receiving means 9, 11 on the holding rail 7. The holding rail Tis preferably formed by an extruded section of plastics material or light metal, the holding rail 7 being adapted in the transverse and vertical directions to the shape of the front portion of the top (section 6).The first receiving means 9 is formed by an undercut longitudinal groove 14 which is provided with a narrow insertion opening 13 and in which an edge area 16 of the top covering 2 provided with a cross-sectional thickening 15 is secured. The edge area 16 of the top covering 2 is assembled by lateral insertion into the longitudinal groove 14.The cross-sectional thickening 15 is formed for example by a lug-like edge area of the top covering 2, an insert part (plastics material or steel wire, and not shown in detail) being inserted in the lug-like edge area.As shown in Fig. 2, the cross-sectional thickening 15 is formed at the free end 17 of a separate flexible piping part 18 of rubber or plastics material, the flexible piping part 18 being joined to the edge of the top covering 2 in a simple manner by adhesion, sewing or the like.In the embodiment, the cross-sectional thickening 15 and the undercut longitudinal groove 14 are made substantially circular as viewed in crosssection. The cross-sectional thickening and the longitudinal groove 14 can also of course have a different cross-sectional shape. An arcuate upper portion 19 of the first receiving means 9 facing the underside 8 of the section 6 projects into a recess 20 in the section 6 situated thereabove, the recess 20 having a greater width than the arcuate upper portion 19 of the first receiving means 9 (tolerance compensation). The second receiving means 11 extends below the first receiving means 9 and is formed by a partial area of the outer profile of the first receiving means 9 and a bent web 21 extending at a distance therefrom. The second receiving means 11 is made open towards the 6 windscreen frame 5.Adjacent to the insertion opening 13, an integrally moulded attachment 22 bent downwards at the end is provided on the first receiving means 9, a lip portion 23 of the inserted sealing member 10 being supported on the integrally moulded attachment 22 and thus being prevented from falling out.The fastening portion 12 formed by a thin-walled straight flange 24 rests locally against the underside 8 of the section 6 and has openings 25 through which fastening bolts 26 are inserted and can be screwed into threaded bores 27 in the section 6. Head portions of the fastening bolts 26 are supported against the underside of the flange 24. A tube section portion 28 of a second sealing member 29 secured to the windscreen frame 5 is supported against the underside of the bent web 21 of the second receiving means 11.Cl ai ms:7 1. A collapsible or folding top for a vehicle comprising a top covering secured to a portion of a supporting frame attachable to a vehicle, wherein the top covering is secured to the supporting frame by means of a holding rail having a first recessed receiving means for securing the top covering, a second, S eparately-formed receiving means accommodating a sealing member, and a fastening portion offset from the first and second receiving means by means of which the holding rail is attached to the frame.2. A collapsible or folding top according to Claim 1, wherein the holding rail is formed as an extruded section.A collapsible or folding top according to Claim 1 or 2 wherein the first receiving means is formed by a longitudinal channel having a narrow insertion opening and in which an edge of the top covering provided with a cross-sectional thickening is secured.4. A collapsible or folding top according to Claim 3, wherein the crosssectional thickening is formed by 8 a loop-like edge portion of the top covering with an elongate member ins-erted therein.5.A collapsible or foIding top according to Claim 3, wherein the crosssectional thickening is formed on a separate flexible piping part of rubber or plastics material joined to the edge of the top covering by adhesion, sewing or the like.6. A collapsible or folding top according to any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the cross-sectional thickening and the longitudinal channel are substantially circular as viewed in cross-section.7. A collapsible or folding top according to one any of the preceding Claims, wherein a portion of the first receiving means projects partly into a recess in a portion of the frame situated thereabove.8. A collapsible or folding top according to any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the second receiving means is formed partially by an external profile of the first receiving means and a bent flange extending therefrom, the second receiving means being situated below the first receiving means.9. A collapsible or folding top according to any one of 9 the preceding Claims, wherein an integrally-formed attachment is provided on the first receiving means adjacent the insertion opening thereof and is bent downwardly for supporting a lip portion of the sealing member in the second receiving means.10. A collapsible or folding top substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
