Abstract
A mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide comprises a central static body 10 with two linear moving sides 11 actuated by a threaded bar 12 with a smooth centre section and additionally guided by two dowels 13 fixed to the central body 10. The guide is adjusted by using a hatched knob 14 to one side. A common threaded aperture 15 through the central body 10 receives various aperture drilling dies 16. Fig. 3 (not shown) discloses a drilling die attached to a guide suitable for use on flat surfaces. <IMAGE>
Description
MORTICE, LOCK AND DOWEL CUTTING GUIDE
AND 90 DEGREE DRILLING GUIDE
This invention relates to a Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting guide and a 90
Degree Drilling Guide.
As far as I am aware there is no simple hand-held tool to be used in conjunction with a hand-held power drill to cut a precision mortice to receive a mortice lock in doors which are varying in thickness and whilst in situe.
This application can also be used on thinner material, where a number of precision drilled holes are required, i.e., to butt joint two pieces of material accurately.
It comprises of a Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting Guide, a 90 Degree Drilling
Guide and a set of Drilling Dyes.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective the Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting Guide.
Figure 2 shows in perspective a set of various aperture Drilling Dyes.
Figure 3 shows in perspective the base plate of the 90 Degree Drilling Guide.
Referring to the drawing Fig 1. the mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide comprises of a central static body 10 with two linear moving sides 11 via a solid left threaded and right threaded bar with a smooth centre section 12, additionally guided by two dowels 13 fixed to the central body 10, allowing the linear moving sides 11 to slide laterally above and below the threaded bar 12.
Adjusted by using a hatched knob 14 to one side. With a common threaded aperture 15 through the central body 10, which will receive the various aperture drilling dyes 16.
Fig 1. shows the mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide in a position to be placed over the edge of a door at the required height with the appropriate drilling dye 16 screwed to the central body 10. The mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide is held firmly against the edge of the door whilst the hatched knob 14 is turned to secure the linear moving sides 11 snug against the sides of the door then for the power drill and the corresponding drill bit is pushed through the drilling dye 16 and to cut the timber to the required depth then the drill is to be extracted from the work. The mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide is then moved up or down to the next cutting position and this process is to be repeated until the required mortice cavity is complete.
The purpose of this mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide is that it will ensure each drilling action is parallel to the last cut and parallel internally to the sides of the door, making the joint neat, even and precise every time.
The advantage of the mortice, lock and dowel cutting guide is that in the hands of an unskilled and DIY man the results of the mortice will be of craftsman quality and in the hands of a craftsman he will achieve his usual accuracy and with practice, in a fraction of the time.
Referring to the drawing Fig 2. shows a number of various aperture drilling dyes 16, which are varied to suit different sized drill bits; four shown. With the threaded section common to suit Fig 1. and Fig 3.
Referring to Fig 3. shows the 90 Degree Drilling Guide 17 with a drilling dye 16 shown in position. This is used to achieve a precise 90 degree drilled hole to a flat surface that it is placed on, using a power drill with drill bit to correspond to the size of the drilling dye 16.
Claims (6)
- Amendments to the claims have been filed as followsCLAIMS 1. The Mortice, Lock and dowel Cutting Guide is a simple hand-held tool to be used in conjunction with a hand-held power drill. It has an application from light DIY through to industrial and commercial use.
- 2. The Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting Guide will cut a precision mortice to receive a mortice lock in doors that are varying in thickness with the door in situe.
- 3. The drilling dyes are common to both the Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting Guide and the 90 Degree Cutting Guide. The Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting Guide will achieve a series of parallel holes as well as parallel internally to the sides of the door. The 90 Degree Cutting Guide will achieve a precision drilled hole at 90 degrees to a flat surface using a corresponding drill bit to the drilling dye.
- 4. It will cut dowel rod holes in thin board materials, ie, to butt two sheets of contiboard together accurately.
- 5. It can be used with drills and drill bits that are readily available.
- 6. The Mortice, Lock and Dowel Cutting Guide will automatically centralise with precision the cut to be made in the work of any varying thickness of material within its operating parameters, without the need for marking out and measuring.
