Abstract
229,446. Nomura, S. Jan. 7, 1924. Draught, determining and indicating.-A U-valve tube 1 containing mercury is located beneath the level of the water in which the vessel floats and is in communication with the sea by way of a pipe 3 controlled by a cock 4, and with a gauge glass 6 by way of a main pipe 5. The legs of the U-tube are connected by a cock 8 and the leg of the U-tube connected with the sea is provided with a branch pipe 7 which rises to the level of the top of the gauge glass 6 which is supplied with water by a pump 9 by way of the tube 11. The gauge glass is also in communication with a tank 12 which serves to reduce the movement of liquid in the gauge glass and facilitates the setting to the definite level line. The cocks 4 and 8 may be replaced by a suitable three-way cock. The scale 14, Fig. 5, is mounted to slide in guides 19 on a base 20 and is operated by a screwed rod 21. The gauge may be duplicated to show the draught at fore and aft ends of the ship, and, in this case, the scale 22 is a representation of the ship's screw, and shows how much is above water.
