Abstract
A bicycle brake adjuster comprises a template, moulded with a T-shaped raised ridge, 3 and 4, which adjoins two stepped areas 5 and 6. In use, the adjuster is placed between the wheel rim and brake block of a mountain bike (figure 2), in order to correctly set the angle of the brake block, thus eliminating squealing on braking. <IMAGE>
Description
BICYCLE BRAKE ADJUSTER
This invention relates to braking systems, particularly
for mountain bikes.
In order for mountain bike brakes to work efficiently,
the face of the brake blocks have to connect with the
braking surface of the wheel rim, whereby the two faces must meet square with each other. However, when the brake block connects with the wheel rim, squealing often occurs, and is particularly annoying when negotiating steep downhills, when brakes are applied for long periods.
To eliminate this squealing, the brake blocks need
to be adjusted so that the front end (toe end) of the
brake block hits the wheel rim slightly before the rear
end (heel end) of the brake block. This is usually
achieved by a process of trial and error - adjusting
the angle of the brake block - test riding the bike and
adjusting again until the desired position of the block
is achieved.
According to this invention, a bicycle accessory comprising a template for location between a brake block and the braking surface of a wheel rim, for setting a desired angle of the brake blocks, to eliminate squealing when braking, comprising a substantially rectangular plate having a raised ridge extending across one end thereof and a stepped area alongside said ridge on which the surface of the brake block is placed with the forward end of said brake block abutting said ridge,
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be
described by way of example with reference to the
accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the template.
Figure 2 illustrates the plan elevation of the template
placed between the wheel rim and the brake block.
Figure 3 illustrates the front elevation of the template
placed between the wheel rim and the brake block.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 the template is rectangular and comprises areas 1 and 2, which are separate by a raised central ridge, 3, which meets at right angles another raised ridge, 4, which extends across one end of the template. Areas 1 and 2 are raised at said one end to provide stepped areas 5 and 6, which adjoin the raised ridge 4. Areas 5 and 6 have the symbol X embossed on them, whilst area 1 has the word "right" and the symbol - > embossed on it, and area 2 has the word "left" and the symbol - > embossed on it.
In order to use the template correctly, the underside, 7, needs to be placed flat against the braking surface of the wheel rim,8, with the two symbols - > pointing towards the front of the bike, Figures 2 and 3. The braking surface of the brake block,9, is placed on the template area 1, with the heel of the block positioned over the step, 5, and butted up against the ridge, 4.
The block is then tightened up in the usual way. The template is then removed from between the wheel rim and the black and the process is reversed for the block on the other side of the wheel, using areas 2 and 6, instead of areas 1 and 5.
Claims (3)
1
A bicycle accessory comprising a template for location between a brake block and the braking surface of a wheel rim, for setting a desired angle of the brake blocks to eliminate squealing when braking, comprising a substantially rectangular plate having a raised ridge extending across one end thereof and a stepped area alongside said ridge on which the surface of the brake block is placed with the forward end of said brake block abutting said ridge.
2
An accessory according to claim 1, wherein the plate has a further central ridge extending over its length to provide two template areas, one for each side of the wheel.
3
A bicycle accessory constructed, arranged and adapted for use substantially or herein before described and shown in the accompanying drawings.
