Abstract
A toothbrush comprises a head (1), a handle (3), a toothpaste reservoir (4) and dispensing means (6) for moving toothpaste (5) from the toothpaste reservoir (4) to the head (1). The dispensing means (6) comprises a plunger (9) a pump (10) and a spring (11). Pump (10) has a passage (14) leading from the inside of handle (3) to the atmosphere and is closed at its inner end by a valve (15). Pumping action on pump (10) compresses spring (11) and the air in chamber (12), thereby moving plunger (9) towards head (1) to move toothpaste through passage (7) and out onto bristles (2). On releasing pump (10), spring forces pump back towards its original position and valve (15) opens allowing air to enter chamber (12) through passage (14). Preferably, the reservoir (4) contains sufficient toothpaste (5) to last a user the recommended life of the toothbrush. <IMAGE>
Description
Toothbrush
The present invention relates to a toothbrush.
The invention provides a toothbrush comprising a head, a handle, a toothpaste reservoir and dispensing means for moving toothpaste from the toothpaste reservoir to the head.
Thus, the need for a separate tube of toothpaste is obviated.
The dispensing means may comprise a plunger.
Preferably, the plunger is arranged in the handle at an end remote from the head and is movable against the action of a spring.
Preferably, the toothpaste reservoir, which is in the handle, is filled with sufficient toothpaste to last an average user the recommended life of the toothbrush, so that the toothbrush may be disposed of when the toothpaste reservoir is empty. This ensures that the teeth are not cleaned with a worn toothbrush.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a toothbrush according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view of the toothbrush of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the handle end of the toothbrush of Figure 1.
In Figures 1 and 2 a toothbrush comprises a head 1 with bristles 2, a handle 3 having a toothpaste reservoir 4 containing toothpaste 5, and dispensing means 6 for moving toothpaste from the toothpaste reservoir 3 to the head 1. The reservoir 3 is connected to the head 1 by a passage 7 terminating in an opening 8 in the head 1.
The dispensing means is shown more clearly in Figure 3, and comprises a plunger 9, a pump 10 arranged at the open end of the handle 3, and a spring 11 arranged in a spring chamber 12 therebetween. The spring 11 acts on the plunger 9 via a washer 13.
The pump 10 has a passage 14 leading from the inside of a handle 3 to the atmosphere, and is closed at its inner end by a valve 15.
The toothbrush is operated as follows. A pumping action on the pump 10 compresses the spring 11, and the air in the spring chamber 12, thereby moving the plunger 9 towards the head 1 so as to move toothpaste from the reservoir 4 through the passage 7 out of the opening 8 in the head 1 to the bristles 2. On release of the pump 10, the spring 12 forces the pump back towards its original position, and the valve 15 opens to allow air through the air passage 14 into the spring chamber 12.
Preferably, the quantity of toothpaste 5 in the reservoir 4 is sufficient to last the average user the recommended life of the bristles 2, eg one month. At the end of its life, the toothbrush is disposed of and a new toothbrush is purchased, thereby ensuring that the teeth are cleaned by non-worn bristles.
Claims (10)
1) A toothbrush comprising a head, a handle, a
toothpaste reservoir and dispensing means for moving
toothpaste from the toothpaste reservoir to the head.
2) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the
toothpaste reservoir is in the handle.
3) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the
toothpaste reservoir is connected to the head by a
passage.
4) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 2 or 3, wherein the
dispensing means is in the handle.
5) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the
dispensing means comprises a plunger.
6) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the
plunger is arranged in the handle at an end remote
from the head.
7) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 5 or 6, wherein the
plunger is movable against the action of a spring in
a spring chamber.
8) A toothbrush as claimed in Claim 8, wherein a return
movement of the plunger under the action of the
spring opens a valve to allow ingress of air into
the spring chamber.
9) A toothbrush as claimed in any one of the preceding
claims, wherein the reservoir contains sufficient
toothpaste to last an average user substantially the
recommended life of the toothbrush.
10) A toothbrush substantially as herein described with
reference to the accompanying drawing.
