Abstract

229,052. Rotherham, K., and Eyles, A. E. Dec. 31, 1923. Grips, sliding wedge and roller type.-A door is secured by a member projecting therefrom and mounted so as to be capable of a limited universal movement entering a bell-mouthed socket carried by the frame and being gripped by ballsjamming against undercut sides of the socket. Release is effected by depressing the ball-carrying member against its spring to free the balls, or by turning the projecting member till grooves on it register with the balls. Fig. 1 shows the device applied to a railway carriage door, the door frame B having a projecting member A secured to it by plates A3 engaging a ball A2 thereon so that the projection has a limited universal motion to enable it to engage the socket C carried by the door D even if the door has warped. The socket C has an undercut recess C3 in which slides a cage E2 carrying balls E and pressed upwards by a spring E3. When the door is closed, the member A, the end A5 of which may be cylindrical or inverselv conical as shown enters the socket, forcing the cage against its spring until it can pass the balls, when the spring E3 returns the cage to the top of the socket and the balls grip the member A securing the door. To release the door, the cage is pulled downwards against its spring by a lever F pivoted at F2 and engaging a neck E4 of an extension E5 of the cage. The cage may be locked against operation for release by the projection G3 on the boss G, turned by a square key, engaging a groove E6 in the extension E5. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the projection A is carried by the door D and the socket by the door frame B and release from the inside is possible. This is effected bv pulling the knob E8 connected to an extension E7 of the cage E2. In this form. release from the outside is effected by gripping the fixed handle J and pressing the button H2, when a spring-pressed rod H connected therewith and passing through the member A presses on the cage at its base E9 and releases it. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the member A is provided with axial grooves L. In the locking position, the ribs between these cause the balls to jam in the socket. The cage is prevented from rotating by a lug E10 engaging a slot C5. A spring plunger K3 acts on a cam K4 carried by the rotatable member A so that normally the ribs are engaging the balls. When the handle K is turned, the grooves L come opposite the balls which are thus 'released, enabling the member A to be withdrawn. The stem A is mounted so that it can be turned by the spindle of the handle K and still have a limited universal movement, by forming a groove in the ball A2 so that balls All, fitting into semicircular slots in the spindle, form the connection between the stem and the spindle.
