Abstract

228,941. Hanson, B. M. W. Feb. 9, 1924, [Convention date]. Screw threads, grinding; wheels.-Relates to a machine for grinding threads on taps, gauges, screws &c. of the type having a tilting table b, whose movements take the work up to and away from the tool g, which is in the shape of a cylinder having a number of similar circumferential serrations of the shape of the thread and is drawn from outside the machine. The cam R, Fig. 4, feeds the work to the tool the cam S reciprocates the work a distance! less than the effective length of the wheel. Both these cams are detachably mounted on a shaft 96 driven by gearing, whose speed ratio can be changed when the machine is set up. The cam R acts on a roller 89 and through linkages 88, 87, 86, 85, 84, 83, Figs. 1 and 4, and either puts a pawl 82 into engagement with a tooth wheel 80 or lets it run idly over the wheel. If it is in engagement, the shaft 35 is turned and the worm and wheel 28, 27 at the other end of this shaft raise or lower the end of the support 33 of one end of a lever 25, Fig. 3, pivoted at 22, to an upstanding part 23 on the rearward projection 24 of the tiltable worktable. At the same time the shaft 76, Figs. 1 and 4 is rotated and operates an escapement mechanism to cause engagement or release between the constantly rotating wheel 66, Fig. 4 and the pawl 69 on the disc 68 so that the shaft 39 is rotated to operate the cam 38, Fig. 3, which acts on the lever 25 on the other side of its pivot to tilt the table. To get special shaped teeth, a cam 42, Figs. 3 and 4, may be used and is then driven from the shaft 43 when operation of the handle 58 throws in the clutch 61. The cam S gives appropria.te movement to the work slide 13 through the roller 101. The shaft 96, cams R, S, and change gear may be removed from the machine as a unit for setting the machine. Specification 184,510 is referred to.
