Abstract

228,775. Rayfield, T. J., and Bishop, F. H. June 17, 1924. Buoys.-A life-saving device for use with submarines comprises a hollow vessel a which is lowered from the surface of the water and is connected to the submarine by divers, the junction between the vessel and the submarine being effected by a large diameter tube b through which the crew can pass from the submarine to the vessel a. The vessel a may be partly filled with water to facilitate its descent, being provided with air inlet valves m and outlet valves l for discharging the water. The tube b preferably has a leather lining e which projects from the free end of the pipe b, carries the screwed union g and is provided with a clamping device n which is released by the divers to allow the crew to pass along the tube b. Manholes having screwed bosses projecting inwardly and outwardly are provided on the shell of the submarine, screwed caps being provided normally to close the manholes. The vessel a is provided with a similar cap d which closes the entrance from the tube b into the vessel a.
