Abstract

A deflator for deflating high pressure tyres and comprises a body (1), a head portion (2) at one end, and a threaded bore (3) at the other end. The threaded bore (3) has a pin (4) centrally positioned within the bore (3) to engage a valve titty and cause the release of air through the valve. Channels (5) are circumferentially spaced about the inside of the bore (3) to deflect the released air away from the operator. Instead of the pin (4) a rotatable piston may be provided which unscrews the valve core. <IMAGE>

Description

DEFLATOR The present invention relates to a deflator for deflating tyres and the like. Such a deflator is particularly useful for deflating high pressure tyres, such as aircraft tyres.
When an operator deflates a high pressure tyre, by means of a valve, there is a tendency for the escaping air to be directed at the operator' s hands. High pressure jets of air incident on the skin are likely to cause embolisms.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of a deflator according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 3 shows the deflator of Figure 2 in its position after removing a valve core.
The deflator of figure 1 has a body 1, a head portion 2 at one end and a threaded closed bore 3 at the other end of the body 1. The threaded closed bore 3 screws onto the outside of a valve casing.
A pin 4 is held centrally within the bore 3. Air is released from the valve when the pin 4 engages the valve titty as the bore 3 is screwed onto the valve casing.
Channels 5 are formed in the thread of the bore 3 in order to allow air released from the valve to escape from the bore 3; the air flowing in the direction of the arrows A, and hence away from the operator.
A hexagonal bore 6 is made in the head portion 2 so that the dust cap may be unscrewed or screwed onto the valve casing.
In another embodiment of the present invention, as shown in figures 2 and 3, the pin 4 in Figure 1 is replaced by a piston 7, which slides within a bore 8 in the body 1.
The piston 7 is prevented from sliding out of the bore 8 within the body 1 by first shoulder 9 in the wall of the bore 8 and second shoulder 10.
The piston 7 is sealed to the bore by an "0" ring seal 11. The piston has a forked end 12 which couples with the valve end to unscrew the valve core. Once the valve core has been removed, the air escapes from the tyre at a greater rate than in the embodiment of Figure 1 and so the tyre deflates more quickly.

Claims (11)

1. A deflator for releasing air through a valve of a tyre or the like, the deflator comprising means for engaging the valve to release air through it and means for deflecting the released air away from the user of the deflator.
2. A deflator as claimed in claim 1, wherein the means for engaging the valve to release air through it is a pin.
3. A deflator as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means for deflecting said released air away is a blind bore which surrounds the casing of said valve.
4. A deflator as claimed in claim 3, wherein said bore is threaded to screw onto said valve casing and has one or more passages for releasing said air.
5. A deflator as claimed in claim 4, wherein said passages are channels.
6. A deflator cap as claimed in claim 5, wherein said channels are circumferentially spaced about said bore.
7. A deflator as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein said deflator further comprises a body having a bore therein, and the engaging means comprises a piston slidable in said bore of said body.
8. A deflator according to claim 7, wherein said piston has a pin at one end for engaging the titty of said valve.
9. A deflator according to claim 8, wherein said pin end is forked to embrace said titty of valve and said piston is rotatable to unscrew the valve core.
10. A deflator according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein a head portion is provided with a hexagonal bore.
11. A deflator as hereinbefore described with reference to figures 1 and 2 or figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
