WANGDOC: 1153k The invention relates to an internally ventilated brake disc for a disc brake having substantially radially extending air channels between side walls and transverse ribs of the brake disc.
DE 22 57 176 discloses an internally ventilated brake disc for a disc brake having passages in the friction surfaces; transverse ribs in a peripheral region of the disc define outwardly extending air channels in which through passages are formed.
An object of the invention is to provide an internally ventilated brake disc having substantially radially extending air channels, in which cracking in the region of the through passages is prevented.
The invention provides an internally ventilated brake disc as claimed in Claim 1.
As a result of reinforcing the brake disc in the region of additional passages, cracking in the friction surfaces of the discs is prevented. To this end, the additional passages are arranged in reinforcements, such as half ribs or pegs. The weakening at points in the 2 material of the brake disc is counteracted by this disposition of the passages.
The reinforcements are arranged between the transverse ribs which delimit the air channels of the brake disc, so that the passages penetrate the free space of the channels and form a means of completion for the other passages which run partially through the transverse ribs.
The half ribs of each brake disc side are opposite one another with an air gap therebetween and are preferably arranged centrally between the transverse ribs of the air channel in a longitudinal centre plane.
In the region of the through passage, the half ribs are provided with a greater width than in the remaining region. The length and width of the half rib can be constructed according to requirements.
According to a further embodiment according to the invention, the reinforcements may also be constructed as pegs. They are arranged with a spacing from one another and run in the longitudinal centre plane of the air channel.
According to a further embodiment, a combination of reinforcements in the form of ribs and pegs may be 3 provided according to requirements. This is necessary if greater heat stresses occur for example on one brake disc side or other conditions make it necessary to use pegs as a reinforcement on this side instead of the half ribs.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a part of a brake disc in section, with half ribs as reinforcement, Fig. 2 shows a section along the line II-II of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows a section along-the line iii-III of Fig.
Fig. 4 shows a view similar to Fig. 1 of a further embodiment with a reinforcement in the form of pegs, Fig. 5 shows a section along the line V-V of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 shows a section along the line VI-VI of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, an internally ventilated brake disc 1 of a disc brake system has substantially radially extending air channels 5 between friction surfaces 3 and 4. These air channels are delimited by transverse ribs 4 6 and are open to the outside and to the inside. Through passages or bores 7 are arranged with part of their periphery in these transverse ribs 6.
Reinforcements 8, are provided between the transverse ribs 6 and additional passages or bores 10 are formed therein. The reinforcements are provided in Figs. 1 to 3 in the form of half ribs 8.
The half ribs 8 of each brake disc side 3 and 4 are arranged opposite one another with a spacing therebetween (air gap A), so that air for cooling the brake disc can circulate in the air channel 5.
In the further embodiment. according to Figures 4 to 6 reinforcement pegs 9 are also arranged opposite one another with an air gap a therebetween. The pegs 9 are integrally formed or cast with the brake disc and, like the half ribs 8, run in a longitudinal centre plane X-X between the two transverse ribs 6. The pegs 9 have a diameter such that the bores 10 do not cause any weakening of the brake disc.
The pegs 9 and the half ribs 8 may be combined in a brake disc, so that for example one brake disc side has half ribs 8 and the other brake disc side has pegs 9.

Claims (9)

Claims
1. An internally ventilated brake disc for a disc brake having substantially radially extending air channels between side walls and transverse ribs of the brake disc, wherein the side walls have reinforcements arranged between the ribs and with transverse passages therethrough, the reinforcements being distributed along at least part of the length of the air channels and extending opposite one another from the side walls with an air gap therebetween.
2. A brake disc according to Claim 1, wherein the reinforcements comprise at least one half rib per brake disc side wall and are arranged substantially centrally between the said transverse ribs and substantially radially along a longitudinal centre plane of the channels.
3. A brake disc according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the half ribs in the region of the transverse passages have a greater width than in the remaining region of the half ribs.
4. A brake disc according to Claim 1, wherein the reinforcements comprise pegs arranged substantially centrally between the transverse ribs, and the i, 0 A 7 transverse passages extend substantially centrally through the pegs..
5. A brake disc according to Claim 4, wherein a plurality of pegs are arranged one behind the other and/or next to one another between the transverse ribs.
6. A brake disc according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein additional passages extend partially in the transverse ribs.
7. A brake disc according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the reinforcements comprise a combination of half ribs and pegs.
8. A brake disc substantially as herein described with reference to Figs. 1 to 3 or Figs. 4 to 6 of the accompanying drawings.
9. A disc brake comprising a brake disc as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
