Abstract
A self-loading light trailer 1 containing a longditudinal track upon which a trolley unit 3 with a lift-arm assembly 4 with load handling attachment 10 is mounted that can traverse the load between the rear loading/unloading position to a correctly balanced transport position further forward on the trailer more over the trailer axle. The tendancy for the front end of the trailer to raise during loading/unloading is stabilised by the use of rear mounted retractable jacklegs. The length of the track is minimised by making the rear part of the deck 11 movable or replaceable to allow loading and unloading to take place as close to the axle centre of rotation as possible thereby minimising the tendancy of the front end of the trailer to raise during loading or unloading. <IMAGE>
Description
SELF LOADING TRAILER
This invention relates to a light trailer that is capable of loading and unloading itself.
When a non-mobile load of up to 2 tons, for example, a pack of building blocks, bags of cement on a pallet, or a stationary piece of plant, are transported by road, they are usually carried either on a commercial lorry or often on a light trailer towed behind a car or small commercial vehicle.
This sort of heavy non-mobile load is dependant on loading and unloading facilities at each end of the journey. Heavy goods lorries can be fitted with their own loading cranes, but become uneconomic to use if they are needed to transport a single load of this order of weight. Trailers and lighter commercial vehicles are more economical to use but in many cases the loading and unloading facilities that they require to shift these single heavy loads are not available at both ends of the journey. A light trailer capable of loading and unloading these loads itself would be a more economic alternative.
According to the present invention there is provided a self-loading trailer comprising a wheeled chassis part of which incorporates a member or members forming a longditudinal track on the trailer on which travels a trolley assembly to which is mounted, a lift arm assembly providing means to attatch various types of attatchments to hold the various different sorts of loads that the trailer will handle and to raise and lower said loads, a means to cause the trolley assembly with the lift arm assembly, attatchment and the load to travel on the track from a loading position over the rear of the trailer to the correct position for the load to be carried on the trailer, a means to remove and return the part of the trailer deck to the rear of the trailer axle to enable the load to be picked up or lowered over the rear of the trailer as close as possible to the centre of rotation of the trailer axle, in order to minimise the tendancy for the front of the trailer to lift up and if necessary rear support jack leg or legs to the rear of the trailer to provide additional stabilising to the overhang torque of the load on the trailer when being raised or lowered.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1. shows the trailer with a split deck with each deck traversed forward, stabilizer legs extended, about to lift a load from the ground over the rear of the trailer.
Figure 2. shows the trailer with load raised above the deck height with the trolley assembly traversed forward to a position longditudinally on the trailer for correct balance of the load when lowered onto the trailer deck, stabilizer legs raised and decks traversed back.
Figure 3. shows the implement lowered onto the deck ready for transportation on the trailer.
Referring to the drawings, the trailer comprises a wheeled chassis unit (1) containing a longditudinal member (2) upon which a trolley (3) can traverse powered by a double acting hydraulic cylinder (not shown). A lift arm assembly (4) is pivotally mounted to the trolley (3) and is raised by hydraulic cylinders (5). An attachment frame (6) is also pivotally mounted to the lift arm assembly and controlled by hydraulic cylinder (8). In this example a pair of pallet forks (10) are attached to the attachment frame (6).
Hydraulic power is provided by a small power pack unit (9) mounted on the trailer. The trailer also comprises of a split deck (11) each side being capable of being moved forward on tracks to allow the load to be raised and lowered over the rear of the trailer as close to the trailer axle centre as possible. A pair of stabilizer legs (12) are attached to the trailer chassis at the rear.
The load is raised clear of the deck and then traversed forward until the weight of the load is correctly located longditudinally in relation to the trailer axle and then lowered onto the repositioned decks.
The stabilizer legs will no longer be taking any load and can be raised.
To unload the trailer the operations described above would be carried out in the reverse order.
An alternative to the traversing split deck could be that the rear section of the deck is easily detached or folded up when loading is taking place.
Claims (3)
1. A self-loadina liaht trailer comprising a wheeled chassis part of which
incorporates a member or members forming a longditudinal track on
the trailer on which travels a trolley assembly to which is mounted a
lift-arm assembly with means to mount a load holding attachment for
the load, a means to cause the trolley assembly with lift-arm assembly,
load holding attachment and load to travel on the track from a loadinq/unloading position over the rear of the trailer to a more
forward position for the load to be carried on the trailer and support
jack leg or legs to the rear of the trailer to provide stabilising to the
overhang torque exerted by the load on the trailer when being raised
from or lowered to the ground.
2. A self-lc,ading light trailer as claimed in Claim 1 where means are
provided to remove and replace the part of the trailer deck platform.
if fitted, to the rear of the trailer axle to enable the load to be
picked up from or put down on the ground as close as possible to the
centre of rotation of the trailer axle in order to minimise the length of
track required for sufficient forward movement of the load to reach
the transport position.

down on the around closer to the centre of rotation of the trailer
axle in order to reduce the overhang torque exerted by the load on
the trailer when being raised from or lowered to the around and also
reduce the length of trolley track required to move the load from
the rear loading uosition to the transport position.
2. A self-loading light trailer as claimed in Claim 1 where the deck
platform comDrises a split deck both sides being capable of moving
forward on either side of the trolley track sufficient distance to allow
the rear of the decks to be clear for loading and unloading to take
place closer to the centre of rotation of the trailer axle and to move
back to support the rear part of the load when it has been raised
and traversed forwards and lowered at the correct transport position.
