Abstract
A triangular box shaped construction 1 fits at the base of the angle formed by the down tube (2a) and seat tube (2b) of a pedal cycle and is held in place by straps 3 and mouldings 4. The carrier can accommodate either a water container or a box capable of enclosing miscellaneous items thus giving more valuable carrying space to a touring cyclist, and has one side hinged or removable for access. <IMAGE>
Description
CYCLE FRAME CARRIER
This invention relates to a carrier which is mounted between the two upright frame tubes of a pedal cycle.
Saddle bags and various panniers are numerous, the latter are normally positioned over the front and rear wheels of the cycle all are well known and used by the touring cyclist.
Panniers and saddle bags in particular are mounted fairly high on the cycle thus when fully loaded tend to make for a more unbalanced machine than ever.
The cycle frame carrier will enable the most heavy essential of cycle touring, namely, water, to be carried at a much lower level by using a water container which when used fits into the carrier giving a more balanced ride, the water container can be substituted with a box which also fits into the carrier, this box will give extra storage space for such items as spare batteries, maps, puncture repair kits or tools. If neither of the above are being used the carrier itself can be utilised for stowing away cycle capes, road maps or sandwiches. The use of this carrier will free-up valuable space in the saddle bags and panniers, previously taken up by baulky water bottles.
The cycle frame carrier is positioned between the down tube and the seat tube, fitting snugly between the two. The method of attaching the carrier to the tubes may be achieved by use of straps or catches. The snug fit is obtained by a moulding on the front and rear edges of the carrier which are in contact with the down tube and seat tube of the cycle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with references to the accompanying drawings in which :
Figure 1 shows a view of the cycle frame carrier in position
on the cycle.
Figure 2 shows the position of the straps attaching the carrier
to the tubes and the mouldings between the carrier
and the tubes.
Figure 3 shows the cycle frame carrier in both a closed and
open state.
Figure 4 shows the water container in place in the carrier.
Figure 5 shows the carrier box sitting in the carrier and
out of the carrier with the lid off.
Referring to the drawings the cycle frame carrier comprises of a triangular shaped box 1, open at the top, which sits at the base of the angle formed by the down tube 2a and seat tube 2b. The width of the carrier is such that neither the turning cranks of the pedals nor the cyclists feet will be obstructed.
The carrier is attached to the cycle frame tubes by means of straps or clips 3. To enable the carrier to attain a snug fit mouldings may by affixed to the front and rear edges of the carrier 4, these mouldings may be made of rubber, plastic, foam or any material that will act as a cusion between the box and the frame tubes.
One side of the carrier can be hinged to allow contents to be loaded/unloaded (Fig 3), and a simple clip 5 keeps the side panel shut when required.
A water container 6 can fit into the carrier, with a filler cap 7 on top. The shape of the top leading edge of the water container Fig 4 reflects the need to operate gear levers which are often mounted on the down tube 2a. The water container can be constructed from plastic, pvc, glass fibre or metal and would carry approx 2 Litres of water.
A box 8 which can also fit into the carrier when the water container is not being used is shown at Fig 5. As with the water container 6, the shape reflects the possible position of gear levers. To gain access to the inside of the box, the lid 9 is removed, the lid sits on a rim around the inside of the box 10. The box can be made of wood, plastic, glass fibre metal or pvc.
Claims (2)
1 A cycle frame carrier comprising of a box-form construction which in use is mounted at the base of the triangle formed by the down tube and seat tube of a pedal cycle, the interior of the carrier being accessible by one side of the carrier being opened either on hinges or removing side completly.
2. A cycle frame carrier as claimed in claim 1 which can be loaded with a water container, the container being loaded by placing it in a position through an open top of the carrier.
2 A cycle frame carrier as claimed in claim 1 which can be loaded with a water container, the container being loaded by opening said one side of the carrier or by just placing it in position through a open top of the carrier.
3 A cycle frame carrier as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein a box can be loaded into the carrier.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. A cycle frame carrier comprising of a box-form construction which in use is mounted at the base of the triangle formed by the down tube and seat tube of a pedal cycle, the interior of the carrier being accessible from the top.
