Winding-machines; roving and thread guides; rollers.-In a machine for winding yarn under tension, the yarn is admitted at a given rate to the admission side of the machine and is wound on to a cone at a greater rate on the receiving side of the machine, the yarn in consequence being stretched in a fixed proportion, the relation between the rate of feed and the rate of winding on being positively and exactly controlled in constant relation and being independent of the number of layers of yarn wound on top of one another on the receiving core. The yarn passes over a yarn guide 6 and round the smaller diameter of a two-diameter roller 3, Fig. 1, and thence to the core 1 upon which it is wound. The roller 3, which may be loaded to ensure sufficient frictional contact, rests upon and is driven by the core 1, thus ensuring a difference of speed between the smaller diameter of the roller 3 and the core 1, and a consequent stretching of the yarn. The bottom of the groove in the roller 3 may be sloped to accommodate more than one turn of yarn and the roller is traversed parallel to its axis to build the yarn upon the core 1. In a modification, the yarn passes round rollers 25, 3, 24, Fig. 5, to the core 1, the stretch being effected between the rollers 3, 24, and a scraper 21 being provided to direct loose ends of yarn on to the roller 24. In another modification, a belt 16, Fig. 4, is passed round pulleys 17, 18, carried on arms 19 pivoted at 20 and contacts with a roller 14 resting upon a roller 12, the thread passing from a point 23 round the system 16, 17, 14, 12 and being wound on a core 1 driven by a cylinder 10 at a greater surface speed than that of the roller 12. Either or both of the rollers 12, 18 may be driven, motion being imparted to the members 14, 16, 17 by friction, while a guard 22 and scrapers 21 are provided.
