227,343. Brandwood, J., Brandwood, T., and Brandwood, J. May 22, 1924. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Filters with loose filtering-materials.-Sand is so tightly compressed in a perforated receptacle that the whole or the greater part of the impurities in liquids filtered therethrough is arrested at the surface of the sand. A filter unit fixed over an aperture 6, in a base plate 5 comprises inner and outer perforated cylinders 7. 15, each surrounded by gauze, fabric or the like, the space between the cylinders being packed with sand. The cylinder 7 has a screw cap 10 and the sand is pressed down by a nut on the cylinder 7 working on a plate 12. A number of these units is shown fitted in the sump of a tank in which dye liquors is mixed. The base plate 5 has a flange 19 engaging with a rubber ring 20 in a recess in the bottom plate of the sump. The outlet 27 is connected to a pump. Rods 28 are provided for lifting the plate 5 and the filters.
