Abstract
A lighted sign, designed upon activation to attract the attention of persons outside the vehicle to the fact that the driver/passengers inside the vehicle is/are in danger, is activated by means of a button or switch located near to the driver. The sign may be contained within a conventional high-level interior braking light normally positioned on the rear parcel shelf of the vehicle, or may be located in a separate housing.
Description
VEHICLE EMERGENCY DEVICE Descripfion This invention relates to an emergency light system for vehicles to alert people outside the vehicle that the driver is in trouble.
An increasing number of vehicles now have a braking light installed in the rear parcel shelf inside the car. These lights are activated by depression of the brake pedal of the car, and provide a highly visible warning to the vehicle behind that the preceding car is slowing down.
There is also increasing concern about the safety of vehicle drivers from personal attack or intrusion into the vehicle. This invention provides for a system with the normal appearance and function of an interior braking light, but modified to incorporate an emergency light fitted to the rear parcel shelf, wired to a button or switch concealed near to the driver's seat.
Alternatively, the emergency device could be contained within a separate unit from the interior braking light, and mounted elsewhere in the vehicle. When the button or switch is activated, the emergency light begins flashing a suitable sign to read, for example, 'Help
Driver in Trouble'. This is designed to alert people outside the vehicle to raise help from a suitable source, normally the Police.
Under normal circumstances, and when the button or switch is not activated, the unit operates simply as an interior braking light, in response to use of the braking pedal.
Claims (3)
1. A vehicle emergency light, contained within the normal and usual form of an interior
braking light, but incorporating a flashing sign capability to communicate a message
to persons outside the vehicle, activated by switch or button located near the driving
position.
2. A vehicle emergency light as claimed in Claim 1 whereby the light is positioned on
the outside of the vehicle.
3. A vehicle emergency light as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 that is
contained within a separate unit from that of the interior braking light.
