Door chains and the like; locking sliding latches.-In a fastening for ships' cabin doors in which an ajar hook is formed as a tie-bar on the end of a plunger 12 capable of endwise and circular movement against the spring 18 to engage the knob 14 on the bar 1 in a key-hole slot in the striking-plate, the ajar hook is secured in the inoperative and operative positions by a projection 30 on the locking bolt 9 for the latch 5 engaging in holes 29, 28 in the inner end of the plunger 12, the bolt 9 being operatively connected to one arm 25 of a bell crank lever 24, operable from inside the door by a knob 11 and from outside by a key-operated. lever-controlled slide 21, an elongated notch 22 in which engages with the other arm 23 of the lever 24. A spring 27 returns the slide 21 to its Fig. 3 position after each hey operation. The plunger 12 is moved endwise by a hand-operated spring-controlled pivoted trigger 16 which engages a shoulder 17 to hold the plunger 12 in the extended position until the bar 1 is moved circularly to engage the striking-plate. The latch 5 is provided with two followers, the outside one 31 operating to withdraw the latch in the usual manner whilst the inside one 32 has two arms 33, 34, the arm 34 coacting with a shoulder 36 on the bolt 9 to free it from the latch 5 and plunger 12 and the arm 33 then acting on the projection 35 to withdraw the latch 5. A pointer adapted to travel over an indicating- plate may be attached to the knob 11. '
