Abstract
A baby seat comprises a soft but sturdy ring with a hole in the middle in which a baby can safely sit and will be prevented from toppling over in any direction. The-hole in the middle is wide enough to enable the baby to sit comfortably. The sides are high enough to support the baby's back, but not so high that he cannot see over the top, and thick enough to ensure that the seat remains securely on the floor and will not overbalance. There is an additional, optional back support (fig 2, not shown) which can fit behind the baby's back and so vary the interior dimensions of the seat in order to suit each child and to allow for growth. The ring and support may be of foam rubber. <IMAGE>
Description
SAFE w SEM This invention relates to a seat for a baby who is not yet mobile.
From the age of four to five months a baby wants to, and is able to, play with and investigate simple toys. For a baby who is not yet able to crawl, the simplest and most natural position from which to do this is sitting on the floor, surrounded by toys. However, there is generally a stage in a baby's development when he can sit for a short period unaided, but will then topple backwards, forwards or sideways.
This invention consists of a soft but sturdy ring with a hole in the middle in which a baby can safely sit, surrounded on all sides by soft "walls."
A specific example will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows an example of the seat in the form of a ring;
Figure 2 shows the removable additional back support.
In this instance the seat is a foam rubber ring. The hole in the middle 1 is wide enough to enable a baby to sit comfortably (at least 30cm diameter). The walls 2 are high enough to support the baby's back, but not so high that he cannot see over the top (@20cm - 25cm) and thick enough to ensure that the seat remains securely on the floor and will not overbalance (@20cm).
Thus, if the chosen external shape is circular, the overall diameter will be in the region of 70cm - 90cm.
An additional, optional support is provided for smaller babies. This is in the form of a piece of pliable material (in this example a piece of foam rubber @ 55cm x 20cm x 5cm) which will fit between the inside of the seat and the baby's back. Thus, the interior dimensions of the seat can be varied to suit each child and to cater for growth.
Although in the given example the seat is circular, externally it could be any shape.
Internally the most effective shapes would be circular or oval, but other shapes would be possible.
The chosen material in the example is foam rubber, but any soft, childsafe material would be suitable.
